The SEC Should Only Send One Team to the Playoff: The Champion

The playoff should be conference champions only. The SEC Champ would have effectively beaten the best in the SEC. If you cannot win your conference or division, you should not get invited to the playoff for the National Championship. Unless we go to 6 teams, the playoff should only consist of the top 4 conference champs.
I do not care who the SEC Champ is. They should go and that should be it. Other teams have had their chance.

I don't expect it to happen but if multiple other conferences shite the bed and an SECW team such as Alabama or Auburn is left out of SECCG because their one loss tiebreaks them, I'm ok seeing them in the playoff over a 2 or 3 loss conference champ.
less so with Bama now that Ole Miss lost. I definitely want to see a conference champ picked over a non champ with an equal record though.

Unfair to Notre Dame.

If you only let conference champions in the 4 team playoff you cannot say the winner is the National Champ of CFB.
Only by having the best 4 teams play can a true champ be crowned.
But you already knew that, right.

Let them join a conference.
Who do they think they are anyway, the Harlem Globetrotters?
I agree with the OP, I don't want to see SEC football championships disappear into irrelevance like basketball and baseball championships.

Says an LSU fan in a year where they have zero chance of being the potential second team from SEC to make it.
Bet your tune would be vastly different if you were sitting at zero loses with a chance to not make conf championship (see MSU as an example of said possibility).

Totally different than the BCS. Finding two of the five best teams from the Conference Champions,is more likely than finding 4 of the best teams from the 5 Champions.

Mine wouldn't.
What's really odd is reading posts from fans of Alabama wanting to sneak into the playoffs rather than go in as champions. Fans of the team with the most conference championships sounding like Auburn fans. lulz
'Champions or bust', right Bama?

Let's say the top 4 conference champs are:
SEC Champ (we'll say an undefeated MSU for this scenario)
PAC Champ (2-loss Oregon)
Big 12 Champ (1-loss KSU)
ACC Champ (undefeated FSU)
In this scenario, we'll say Auburn finishes 11-1. Then you would have an Auburn team that:
Has a better record against a tougher schedule than Oregon (with their loss to the #1 team in the country)
A win over another of the entrants to the playoff (KSU)
The same can also apply, assuming the following:
SEC Champ (1-loss Ole Miss)
Big 12 Champ (2-loss West Virginia)
PAC Champ (2-loss Oregon)
ACC Champ (Undefeated FSU)
In THAT scenario, you've got a 1-loss Alabama sitting at home despite a better record against tougher competition than two teams, and a win over one of those two teams.
So, no, I think it's a bit too complicated to make a concrete rule that only conference champs get to go. If FSU gets even one loss and wins the ACC, that conference is abysmally weak. No way should they be in over a 1-loss Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss MSU or UGA.

In regards to the BCS, it was never the mission statement to match up the two best "conference champs" but the two best "teams".
So, is the mission statement of the playoffs to match the 4 best teams or the 4 best conference champs? Because not all conferences are made equal - the SEC has dang well proven that this year.

I agree with the OP and another poster, I want to see the championship game still matter. If we are just taking 2 or 3 teams anyway, what's the point in a championship at all.

The situation you are dealing with is Bama fans heard about the 4 team playoff and immediately thought "I wonder who the other 3 teams will be."
The idea that Alabama may not earn a spot is not a thought they can incorporate into their thought process. And since Alabama is necessarily in the playoff in their mind, everything that happens before then is irrelevant and unanalyzed.

Wut?
So if Alabama/Aubbie/State or Ole Piss beat Mizzou or USCe, they are the best? No sir. Edit: Forget dem Dawgs - UGA

What happens when two of those other teams are garbage? Marshall is undefeated, should they be in the playoff?

they have had like 90 years to join a conference. If they want to play by the same rules as everyone else, they should be in a conference.
They're in one in all other sports, why should they get to not be in one in football?

What if a situations plays out where two conference champs have four losses?

No.
I'm all for keeping college football "national", but if 3 out of 4 of the best teams are SEC teams (multiple 11-1 teams) this year, they should play for the hardware.
This year is an outlier.
