Why Does Everyone Think Ole Miss Fans Are Rich?

Where does this erroneous belief come from? The school is one of the weakest (perhaps the weakest) academically in the SEC. It sits in the shadows of one of the nation'a poorest metro areas.
If Ole Miss fans were truly rich, wouldn't they buy their children's way into Harvard, Yale, or Princeton? Or, at the very least, Vanderbilt?
This truly is not a flame, but I just don't get where this idea comes from.

A few are. Most are middle class suburbanite posers.

Why does this matter to you?

I don't think anybody is fooled by it. Although compared to state fans they seem downright Rockefeller.

I don't have this perception. Where is it coming from?

You don't have to be rich to buy a couple of southern pride outfits

Anyone's rich compared to Mississippi State.

They are "Mississippi rich"

I have a family member that goes to Vanderbilt. I can tell you that it is an school where rich elite southern families send their kids to. In the class room many kids are sons and daughters of hedge fund managers, investment bankers, lawyers, doctors, etc. Without a doubt Vanderbilt families are richer compared to Ole Miss.

In Mississippi 50k is considered rich.

Because they take pride in dressing well to go to football games.

Oxford has some money, but I don't know that it's anymore than any other traditional SEC school. Maybe just more visible through the commitment to campus and the greek system there. As far as why they send their kids there vs. somewhere like Vandy it seems all about the legacy. That's just a general observation though.
And you're also making the broad assumption that rich = smart.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people in Mississippi drive cars more expensive than their house. Real estate here is DIRT cheap like 100k gets you 3000 sqft.

My wife is a Ole Miss Alumn. Her family has money but they believe driving nice cars and having nice clothes is more important than retirement.

Because of their tailgate setups. We're ole miss, our tailgates are fancy as frick!!
Nevermind the fact that it's a cheap plastic table with a $4 tablecloth from walmart thrown over it with a cheap knockoff candleholder and sam's club potato salad.
But hey, who else tailgates with candle holders and tablecloths RIGHT!?

I've met three different types of Ole Miss students
1) The ones legitimately earning an education and making something of themselves
2) Spoiled rich kids that come from old money in the south
3) Spoiled rich kids from places like Texas or Georgia where they could not get into their state schools

I didn't realize everyone did.

The wealthier families in Mississippi frequently send their kids to Ole Miss. This is probably true for the flagship university in any state, but particularly so for Mississippi since there is less emphasis on travel. Since Ole Miss has a rather small number of students for a state university, this contingent represents a larger percentage than usual. So along with the reputation, many children from successful but not necessarily wealthy families associate with this stereotype and identify with it.
Wealth is always a relative term. Take these Ole Miss students who believe themselves to be aristocrats and put them in Manhattan, and they would get a different perspective. But compared to the per capita income of the state, they are doing very well and represent the "upper class" of that area.
