This is true, but it's very provincial. There are not a lot of extremely wealthy people there who have spent a summer in France or who speak multiple languages or who know the difference between a good single malt Islay or Speyside Scotch. That's why a lot of people outside Ole Miss chuckle a little at this elitism.

I think this is it. Its a localized phenomenon, and very relative. IDK why, but the culture around here has never been about that. The big money people here (and there's actually quite a few of them) aren't ostentatious in the least.

Mississippians (in my limited experience) have a real need to "place you" as in "what does your daddy do for a living" type stuff. Eastern Arkansans can be more like that, too. And there is some wealth there, I just think the fact that it is surrounded by such extreme poverty in some areas that the idea of "class" distinction becomes more important. Nobody wants to be considered "white-trash".

They're rich for the state of Mississippi, so they like to flaunt it by wearing seer sucker and bow ties. I have a lot of OM friends and have always enjoyed my brief stays in Oxford, but I'm fascinated by the pseudo-elitist culture there. They wish they were UVA.

I related the story on here before about my first encounter with that eastern Arkansas delta mentality. There was a floppy-haired kid from Lake Village or some place, and he came to my dorm room (at a camp at Ouachita Baptist) and he's looking through my closet. He goes "you've got some nice things in there."

It struck me as weird, and I wouldn't understand until later in life that it was a cultural thing for him to "assess" my status by checking out my clothes.

ETA: I noticed he did that to other guys, too.

Easy Arkansasans are like Delta Mississippians. South Mississippians are like Louisanaians. East Mississippians are similar to Bamaians, just as N MS has the same slang as Tennessee, and more likely that as opposed to the idiot that is more like the moron that favors a hoople head and lumps a whole State off of one group..

Fwiw, vandy shouldn't be correlated to the state of Tenn. Out of the 6835 undergrads, only 788 are from Tenn. I'd wager that 11.5% instate demographic is by far the lowest out of the lowest. I would guess all the other schools are at least 60% instate

Well Alabama is now less than 50% in-state students.

Ok, well my bad then. I'm just telling you my perception of the Delta culture, which I associate with Mississippi a lot. I think E. Arkansans are more like Delta Mississippians than those of us over here.

There may be some overlap here, but I'd also add another sub-category: girls with no interest in any sort of legitimate career who go to OM for the sole purpose of meeting their husband so they can play Susie Homemaker as soon as possible.

I have lived all over this great State, but I loathe the delta.

Govt lines aren't tribal lines.

Right on.

I'm going to guess that maybe so-called "segregation academies" and the overal demographic reality contributes to those norms, too.

Whereas in Texas or W-NW Arkansas people who want their segregation just move to the burbs or the town over. I grew up in the lilly-white (formerly, now there are Mexicans) area of western Arkansas.

We all thought the other town was "full of white trash" and sluts, based on football rivalries. It was fun comparing notes when we wound up in college with each other. Every town had the same idea about the others.

Those go in 2 or 3 categories very easily.

Whose name doesn't end in Manning?

John Grisham comes to mind. His undergrad was at State.

OK, here is the deal.

More than half the students at Ole Miss are not from Mississippi, an EXTREMELY high percentage for any state university, especially one in the South.

Most of the out-of-state students ARE in fact from affluent suburban households--a high percentage are from Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, and other large Southern cities, although some are from similar suburbs in the Midwest (St. Louis, etc.)

They come to Ole Miss mainly to have a good time; the campus is beautiful, the coeds are the most beautiful in the country, the school has a unique ante-bellum ambience,, and Oxford is a neat little town--and the "aristocratic" feel to the place is a big part of what attracts these kids.

The other 45% of Ole Miss students are drawn largely from Mississippi's elite. Yes, Mississippi is a poor state, even by Southern standards, but its doctors make as much as doctors anywhere, it has its share of old money and agricultural wealth (especially in the Delta), and, as is the case with any state, there is a small percentage of the population who are quite well-off......and almost all these people send their offspring to Ole Miss.

So the student body is, in fact, skewed towards kids from high-income families, more so than at any other SEC school than Vandy, in all likelihood.

By the way, that study the Gamecock quoted is bogus--the methodology was totally flawed.
