It should be raised to 25. People younger than that drunk are obnoxious.

If your old enough to serve in the armed forces and vote you should be able to have a fricking drink.

18 year olds should not be allowed to vote.

It was a Jimmy Carter ploy, to get more liberal votes because young people are typically more liberal than older people who have matured enough to realize how fricked-up liberalism truly is.

18 year olds do not have a clue, for the most part, what this world is about.

As I posted earlier though ... military personnel should be allowed to drink (and vote) at the age of 18.

I don't see why everyone is in such a fuss about lowering the drinking age. It's a 3 year difference, and very few people actually wait until they are 21 to start drinking. I know people use the argument "If they're old enough to go to war then they're old enough to drink". OK..... Most 18 year old aren't really that mature to handle their alcohol. Hell I know a few 21 year olds who aren't that mature yet.

You absolutely don't know what you are talking about. Jimmy Carter had nothing to do with the change of voter age.

Sorry there Heinlein, that's not the way it works.

why not let the states decide what is proper on a social issue?

When I lived in Lafayette some years ago my 18yo sister was of legal age to drink. But I was told that law was changed by the state in order to get more federal money for their shitty highways.

Yea that doesn't make any sense at all. In fact they make some of the worse bar patrons.

MADD got on a tear in the 80's pressuring the Federal Government to raise the drinking age. The only way the Feds could do it was tying federal highway funds to a demand that states have to raise their drinking age. If I'm not mistaken, Louisiana was the last hold out.

Having been a young soldier, I can vouch for that statement.

No doubt.. Driving from Houston to Mississippi you could be blindfolded in the trunk of a car and tell where Louisiana began and ended.

The issue is America doesn't have what it takes to wait that out. MADD will ruin it because of stats of 18 year olds dying. Lowering the drinking age will require a culture change. Which will take at least 10 years.

Get rid of any federal age limit on alcohol.
Let the states decide, ideally they should scrap any age limit too.

For those complaining about having drunk teenagers in bars, just use public pressure to get bars to only serve those over 21 or whatever.

We still defied them somewhat with a few loop holes and things such as being able to drink when you are 18 if you are with a relative that is 21 or over

surprisingly a lot of states have this

They've earned the right ... and that is why I typed, "on post," where the MPs can handle things if they get rowdy.
