That's just wrong. And I don't go to church.

OP: Some have argued that styles of worship are to blame.
Ya think? I don't know about where you live, but here black church is an ALL DAY thing. Ain't nobody got time for that!
There are black folks in mostly white churches and as far as I know they get along just fine. I've never seen a white person walking in/out of a black church, though.

I have, and they welcomed me and my family just like every other church I have ever been in. I had a black buddy of mine take me to his church a few times in Wichita Kansas. I came out alive.
A true church would never allow bigotry or hate. A true church spends a remarkable amount of time helping the needy, donating to the poor, helping those in times of need and accepting everyone no matter race, creed, color and sexual orientation. These are the things you don't read about in the news. You only get the bullshite about Westboro babtist (terror cell) posing as a church and people start to believe that this is what goes down at churches when it's simply not true.

Why are most churches so segregated?
Because white folks can't sing and they stew in the pews the whole time. Blacks churches just do not have time for that.

Because people of like social background with common interests tend to congregate together. Why do women tend to eat lunch together? People considering this bigotry should look in the mirror.

Very well said.
This will get me a bit wound up. Can't help it. Regardless of religious beliefs, a lot of churches do a lot of good. I routinely argue with a NY guy on a software newsgroup about this. The most obvious example here lately was Katrina relief. The Red Cross wanted money, some of which no doubt never made it to the coast. The churches wanted hammers and nails and shingles and gas cans and diapers and on and on, that they were delivering personally and then staying to help and rebuild. NY guy's best response was that they didn't do it out of the goodness of their heart, they did it to please a God who doesn't exist. There ain't no talkin' to some people .

i go to a bit of a mega church and we have quite a few hispanics and blacks in leadership positions in the body. my best friend on the deacon board is a 60 year old black man from Lafayette.
we have about 3500 attendees on a sunday. in really racist Texas.

Imagine a black pastor being hired by a "white" church
Ok..now what? I imagine that would be far less of an issue than a white being hired at one of those downtown all black revival style churches.
This is a complete non-story. It'd be like asking "how come most groups of friends are so similar? I mean in one close knit group of friends you may have 10 white people, and maybe only 1 black person at most!"
People go where they fit in. My home church is a southern baptist church in a town that was predominantly white until about 10 years ago where there is now a large influx of black people. We have steadily seen the number of non-whites increase in the church. And there are all kinds that attend. There are the ones that dress in suits like most of the other old white people, ones that are dressed down in jeans but hey who cares, they're there, and then you have the ladies dressed their best that sit in the front pew and stand up and wave their hands to the music and shout Amen every few minutes during the sermon. No one cares. It's good they're there. But the fact is, the town has been white for decades, most of the membership has been coming for a while, so obviously there will be more white people there.
It has nothing to do with being bigoted.

I've never been to a church that I would consider "bigoted", though I've met lots of bigoted church goers.

I also used the phrase "a white" so it evens out. What else shoudl I call them, African Americans? They aren't from AFrica so that would not be accurate.

not to pile on but hey, this is a pretty bigoted statement to make

it's not bigoted, it's just ignorant.

Just because you disagree doesn't mean that it's wrong. One of the only places that I've ever hard the N-word uttered was in a Baptist church.
You live in Atlanta, I'm sure you've heard the N word uttered elsewhere.
Maybe not by crackers.

were you actually looking for a real answer? if so, the answer is because like the vast majority of social groups, they are segregated in some form or fashion or else it wouldnt be a specific social group. its nature.

One of the only places
In your entire 20 or 30 years of life, there's only a small handful of places you've ever heard that? I find that too hard to believe.

was in a Baptist church
Did the preacher stand up at the pulpit and shout it? Or was it someone in the crowd muttering under his breath to his buddy next to him about how he didn't like the demographics? If the latter, it seems like that's a character issue with that individual, not with the church itself.

Thats racist
I have been in black churches and I have been in white ones. The black ones are way better, that is not racist, it is personal preference. When it comes to experiences my 2 favorite churches are Catholic ones when they do the full Latin Mass and all the Gregorian chanting and black southern ones where you can't sit still in your seat.
