You know good and damn well why we have black history month; because in my history books growing up there were chapters about Abe Lincoln freeing the slaves and sentences about Fredrick Douglas/Harriet Tubman. Because in school the only thing you learn about black people from the 1600's until now is the following

Were freed
Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglas were both important people
Booker T. Washington w/peanuts
Civil Rights
MLK
Ok. Why don't we have a Jewish history month? They've experienced WAAAY fricking worse than black people ever experienced in America.

A ton of emphasis is, or at least was before all of the bullshite testing, placed on the holocaust. Generally, Black History Month is taught in American History classes.

As it should be. But a month is not wasted on one subject. People should know about the history of black people through education. But a month is excessive as hell.

I'm fairly certain that black history is not the only history taught during Black History Month. I'd have to ask a couple of friends who are teachers now, but that was certainly not the case when I was a kid.

I went to an all-white private school and there was a lot of emphasis put on it. Like it was the only subject we talked about in history class for two weeks and we had to do reports and different projects on it. That's excessive.

My junior year the first black kid to ever go to school there enrolled. It was established in 1966. I'll let you guess why it was established.

The Holocaust didn't happen here. Slavery and segregation did happen here though. Also downplaying slavery because the Holocaust was worse? Come the frick on.
It's good to remember the past, celebrate the progress, and look to continuing the progress in the coming years. I don't see why there's so much butthurt about it (not necessarily directed at you HJJ).

Because it's history like everything else. It's not special and doesn't deserve special treatment IMO. And I think wasting a month on it is unnecessary

In school, with more than a 10 minutes a day, yeah it's overkill. Otherwise, how much of your attention is really spent on BHM during February? Outside of this ridiculous thread of course.

I, personally, enjoy Black History Month. I'm addicted to documentaries, always have been, and I can watch documentaries on the Tuskegee Airmen, Martin Luther King Jr, and things of that nature far more easily.

I remember this day only because on that same day, a farmer who is a major donor to PA came into our farm office ranting about it. To this day I remember his exact words...."You can take a 55 gallon drum of vanilla ice cream and the first scoop of shite you put in it ruins the whole thing"

I think we need Italian history month to make up for the injustices the Feds and their BS RICO cases did to great people like John Gotti.
