James Loewen has some excellent books with very thorough research that pretty much proves that History education in America is half-assed at best and students are spoon fed convenient truths because it is simply less time consuming, less confusing, and adheres to the Americanism way we have all been raised (i.e. that America has maybe had a couple of small hiccups but ultimately is always in the right). Would highly recommend reading this one in particular if you haven't already.

I will certainly do that. I can still remember the day in college when I realized how fricked up this country's history was that my high school history teachers never cared to teach, or were too afraid to teach. There is a lot of opportunity in this country, but we have committed some atrocious acts.

The first Thanksgiving is another good one. You know, the whole omission of death and disease and all that good stuff.

You mean when the native americans gave the englanders food and the englanders gave the native americans smallpox?

Or the fact that the first Thanksgiving isn't really the first Thanksgiving. And that something like half of the settlers died in their first year in America.

And don't get me started on pilgrims with buckles on their shoes.

No more fricked up than any other major power in the last millennium or two.

That being said, slavery and the treatment of Native Americans are a black eye.

How many kids...heck.. how many of you know that North Korea is the only foreign Gov't that holds a captured U.S. Navy ship? Since 1968.

quote:

The USS Pueblo is an American technical research ship. It was boarded and captured by North Korea on January 23, 1968 at the height of the Vietnam Conflict. Known by military historians as the "Pueblo Affair," the capture of the U.S. Navy ship is considered to be a major event in the Cold War.

quote:

Despite the fact that the USS Pueblo has been held captive by North Korea for more than 40 years, it is still officially known as a "commissioned vessel" of the U.S. Navy.

It's actually used as a museum, not favorable to the U.S., as you might guess.

Although it is still a commissioned vessel, the U.S. never tried to retrieve it.

Well in Mississippi its either a private school with some religious affiliation, or the worst public education in the Union.
