To the OP, one myth that I was taught was that we actually vote for the POTUS.

Or that evolution is a myth

My high school biology teacher had to read a thing talking about how evolution was just one of many theories before we learned about evolution... after which someone said, "but evolution is real, right?" And she just said, "of course". And then we learned about genetics and shite.

I imagine that scenario never happens in lots of places down South.

I don't know about Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana, but evolution was covered pretty extensively in South Carolina. At least at my high school.

Well in Mississippi its either a private school with some religious affiliation, or the worst public education in the Union.

Yeah, we learned evolution in middle and high school in Alabama, but this was over 20 years ago before the right-wing nutjobs lost their minds. I don't recall there being much debate over it.

Just what I learned about Lief Ericson. Also I heard the Roman one from one of those crazy fact books.

They've also found cocaine in Egyptian tombs. I have a feeling that at least one group of Westerners if not more went to America before the Vikings.

There was a Baptist church in town that was always trying to get books removed from the school library though.

Trying to remember which books. The only ones I remember are Huckleberry Finn and The Scarlet Letter. There was a list of about 20 or so though.

My cousin went to a Baptist school in Oklahoma and the teachers paddled him for reading Harry Potter. This was like 10 years ago, probably right around when the third one came out.

But Columbus was not the first, that we can be sure of.

Its a concrete fact that the Vikings did. Plenty of evidence to support it. The Vikings just didn't know what they had stumbled on.

I believe Japanese actually, and there's proof of some Japanese interference in the southwest as well. It's still crazy how little we actually know.
