It's also caused some of the most generous and courageous acts of kindness than anything else in the history of mankind.

I say it would be about the same. People would find reasons to start wars with or without religion.

We could launch into a long chicken/egg debate which would change neither of our minds and simply annoy everyone else in the thread or I could just say you're wrong.

God forbid we should annoy someone on this board.

Lots of people have read Campbell

The only philosophy I read regards scientific theories that are unproven but which dovetail with my reductionist outlook.

That outlook requires me to delve into evolution when the subject is something as distinctly human as the topic of this thread. I have to go looking for cause and effect. To me, religion is an effect and evolution is the cause. Whether religion is a good or bad effect is up for debate, as the posts in this thread strongly state.

BTW, the egg came first.

So you're saying that government is responsible for more deaths than religion.

What's the difference between government and religion?

Well in America, I am forced to give money to the government.

False. People by nature are territorial and humanity would not necessarily have prospered sans religion. In fact, I believe quite the opposite as religion offers some a foundation to come back to center in times of turmoil.

Thank god religion is man made and people don't take the old testament literally. If we still clung to those ancient caveman beliefs we'd be killing and stoning over the dumbest shite.

Humans by nature ARENT evil. Otherwise we wouldn't have made it as a species. We are pack animals and do better working together in a community.

Kindly list all these religious wars. The only two I can think of: the Crusades and the Catholics vs Protestants in Ireland. Off the top of my head: U.S. Civil War, no, neither WWI or WWII were about religion, civil war in Russia? no, the Korean War? nope, the Vietnam War? nope, Iraq War? nada.

Now, outside the realm of traditional wars, yes, the vast majority of terrorism is perpetrated by Muslim radicals.

It's either resources or culture. Religion falls under the culture umbrella, but isn't the reason for the war. Just a useful tool to get the rabble hungry to fight.

If your understanding of history stops at gender studies and renaissance Europe, sure.

If it wasn't for wars, the whole globe would be as over populated as China and SE Asia. We're talking a billion people in just France/Germany. Do you really think that is better in the long run?

Religion is mans feeble attempt to deal with the magnitude of God. Where it gets fricked up is when it starts to get combined with Government.

That NEVER works out well. Never.

Come on, you don't see a parallel between religion and government? Are you sure you're agnostic? You don't seem to be able to look at religion objectively.
