I'm saying there would be wars and horrible things happening with or without religion. Religion has also done a lot of good in the world, which people choose to ignore.

Religion
Precisely! It always boggles my mind that nearly all of the educated free thinking athiests and agnostics I know are amongst the most "Christian" in their ethics. Know what I'm saying?

We could launch into a long chicken/egg debate which would change neither of our minds and simply annoy everyone else in the thread or I could just say you're wrong. If you want to ascribe ignorance to that tactic, you won't hurt my feelings. Lots of people have read Campbell and felt like they discovered fire. I am nonplussed.

Nope. Religion has actually caused less than 10% of all recorded wars in history.

Ya I do. Now I find hardcore Athiests and Christians to both be very very annoying. Hardcore Athiests are starting to become the worst group though cause they form all of these opinions and end up being so adamant about them they paint themselves into a box and end up doing the same thing they haughtily ridicule religious folk for doing.

False.
Religion wouldn't be a part of practically every culture if it didn't speak to us in some way. Seems to me it's part of being human. Even us "non religious" types have rituals and cultural traditions we attend to. How different from a religion is that?

What bawbarn's point is that Europe was pagan way before the powers that be decided to let Christianity become its religion. They found from fighting against the muslims that religion is a great sort of nationalism that helps unify different groups of people under 1 cause to fight. This worked well in Europe as the Roman Empire was trying unify other groups of people as it spread. Therefore christianity became a nice tool. Even if they had let the religion die out like so many other religions before it they would have still been fighting other people. So religion isnt to blame, its the power of the state, and the sheeple that are so easily fooled.
You're welcome bawbarn.

I don't disagree with all of your post, but I did want to point out that in practicality, religion is a really poor uniter in matters of war. After all, Muslims are better at killing other Muslims than Seal Team 6 ever dreamed of being (or the crusaders). The crusades devolved into petty squabbles and lots of territories and divisions.

So you're saying that government is responsible for more deaths than religion.
Good call Sleeping Tiger, I agree.

It is better than anything else anyone has come up with though

Slavery works pretty well to get people to kill other people. So does hallucinogens and any sociological setting which leads to group think.

Actually I am saying that religion's innate qualities make it responsible for zero wars. Its just a political propaganda guise.
The problem becomes when you try to argue that it is something more than this, you automatically have to accept everything that comes along with this. What religious people so carefully try to do is take credit for everything good that religions does while pretending that everything bad was an agent of something else.

Humanity would be the same fuked up mess either way. Religion is a result not a cause

What about us cowardly agnostics who simply believe that government is evil and listening to us through our cheese?

Here's some hard, cold, brutal regarding War:
Africa. 10,000 years ago. Drought. Rainy Season months away. Two tribes, one watering hole. There is not enough water for both tribes. Options?
1) The men of both tribes leave the women and children of both tribes at the watering hole and spread out to find more water, neither really expecting to succeed.
BUZZER! Chivalry has not been invented, yet. frick dying. And frick dying of thirst!!! Besides leaving the women and children there is like leaving them to hyenas. Or worse.
2) Pick up the sticks and stones and start duking it out. Whoever's left gets the women and the water. (And, yeah, the godforsaken children).
