Truth.

Fresh powder has way more grip than ice. Roads are way slicker now than they were yesterday. They will be even worse tonight after more snow melts.

Just hiked to my truck near Oak Mountain Middle School and got home. 119 is icy as shite but clear. Still over 200 people at the middle school who spent the night.

It's gonna take a few days to clear everything. It's staying below freezing today and tonight, and won't get above freezing until after lunch tomorrow. Factor in everyone retrieving vehicles, emergency crews getting hundreds out of ditches... I'm taking off until at least Friday. There's no use in trying to get out until most of this mess is cleared.

I'd really like to make it home on 119 this afternoon. Not sure I can make it another night sleeping on my cold office floor. Plus I'd like to see my kids. My office is kind of down in a valley though, and getting up the hills to a main road is going to be tricky.

I'm really suprised Birmingham and Atlanta are not better preprared for these type of ice and snow storms. Louisiana is closed down, the whole state

Cahaba Heights. I have a friend with a 4WD that said he'd come rescue me this afternoon if I needed him to, so I'll probably give him a shout later this morning.

Bham and points north have a reasonable level of equipment. The problem is that the forecast put the ice line around Montgomery and 6 hours later. All the equipment had prepositioned to the south with no hope of relocating in time. Also, it was icing inthepredicted places too.

Yesterday afternoon I was able to get from Cahaba Heights to 459 south to 65 south to 119 without much trouble in a 2wd truck. Not sure what it looks like this morning.

Left Hueytown for Vestavia Hills at 1 yesterday. Got to 150 in Bessemer at 2. Turned back after an hour and went back to Lakeshore around 3. Crossed over 65 at 5:30.Went up one block of Columbiana and turned around. Got stuck at Broadway and Green Springs but then the sand truck came. Through in the towel and headed back here. Went to Walmart and bought a blanket and pillow made it back to square one at 9:30.

Yeah, the roads around my office are looking a lot better already. I have a FWD, manual transmission so I think I'll be able to make a go of it in an hour or two and just keep it in 2nd gear.

Buddy just went down 280E to Valleydale and said it was pretty clear if you stayed in the middle lane. Just slushy, which is okay if cars keep going over it before it freezes.

It isn't as if this happens every time it snows in Birmingham or Atlanta. Snow in the Deep South is infrequent but it does happen about 3 times every 2 years on average in Bham and Atlanta. The problems with this particular situation is that all the forecasts had the snow and ice comfortably South of those areas. Models started shifting north in the hours leading up to the event and they were downplayed by local meteorologists. The second problem was the unusually cold ground temperatures cause sleet and snow to freeze instantly on roads. Two inches of snow in Bham and Atlanta causes a few problems but when it causes roads to essentially become ice skating rinks it doesn't take much to cause problems.

Heck, even here in Mobile we have a half inch of solid ice on the roads from the inch of sleet that fell yesterday. A car unsuccessfully tried to leave our relatively flat parking lot and spun its wheels.

The local meteorologists here in Atlanta weren't downplaying it really. The National Weather Service was and that's who Mayor Reed and Gov. Deal were listening to.

So many botched about the shutdown down here, but they just have Birmingham to look at to see the wisdom in that.

It's not like your weather people had a chance. The first hint that was going to happen came in a model run at midnight Tuesday.

Yall did the right thing. I ended my work at 10am yesterday. It didn't take a brain surgeon to realize the ground has been frozen from the last week of low temps. And weather, while somewhat predictable, is easily.. unpredictable. I'm not attempting to get on the roads until after lunch on Thurs.. at the earliest, and then only to the grocery store.

Read on Twitter that the Leeds police are starting to tow some of those cars at the owner's expense. Assholes.

Agree. It's not their fault for the snow and ice, or that they were abandoned on the interstate. I have a cousin who has been on I-20 between Pell City and Eden, since 12:30 yesterday because of blockages. In the end, it's just one of those, "shite happens", things.
