That's terrible Coastie, I'm so sorry. I remember reading this and hoping he had just ate something that caused him to shy away from food.

I lost a dog a few weeks back, and it tore me up that I wasn't there at the time. I had got really close to her after her brother died a year or so before. This was a week after my grandfather had past as well, so I was feeling horrible.

Never take any moments for granted...

MSCoastie, sorry about your dog. I know how hard it is. I'm sure you remember me losing mine not too long ago, and I've lost 4 pets in roughly 2 years. If there was something to say to make everything better I would, just hang in there.

Give him/her a big, fat steak when you can.

Thanks, but he isn't getting better.

It's cancer in his stomach. He has a week left, max.

He has had a very rough day. If he makes it through the night, I'm probably going to have to have him put to sleep tomorrow.

I'm an emotional wreck. I have no clue how I'm going to do this by myself.

MSCoastTigerGirl, I'm so sorry for you right now.
This is exactly what happened to us that I described earlier. We had the same news, let her eat whatever she will eat and when they stop eating, it's time.
I came home and found her in the yard, and she didn't get up to come greet me, which never happened. I tried to get her to eat something, and she wouldn't even look at it.
Took her to the vet, and that was the end. My wife came and we held her as the vet gave her the shot. It was sad and peaceful all at the same time. Good luck to you in the days ahead.

Thanks. He was eating last night. He won't even look at food today. He is still wagging his tail, he just can't move around hardly at all. This is so hard for me because its just me and him. It has been for 10 years. I have no one except for my parents to support me through this. I didn't take my grandparents deaths this hard.

I am sorry you are dealing with this alone, at least I had my wife and my other dog during this time, but my wife and I cried like a baby for days after she died, and our other dog (her brother) died 7 weeks later, so we got hit pretty hard in a short time. They had been our babies for 9 years and I miss them to this day.
We have other dogs now, and when you are ready and able, you should get a pup, that will help.
We had our dogs cremated and I got their names etched in a stone, and we planted a tree in our yard for them.

This is the first time in a long time that I've felt that I "need" a man. Just for support. I am a female, we aren't wired to do things like this alone.

I'm sure that I will get another puppy. Probably from a shelter. I've never gotten a shelter puppy before. I want to help out.

It's just going to take a while. My dog has more character and personality than some people that I've met. Like I said earlier, we have been through a lot together.

I feel for you, and yes, I would agree that this would likely be more difficult on a woman than a man, especially if you don't have a SO to go through it with.
I wouldn't rush into a puppy unless you just want the companionship, but we have gotten all of our dogs from shelters, and they have all been great dogs.
We actually got the dogs we have now 2 weeks before our 2nd dog died, as companionship for him. Then, he was gone and we had two pups. Probably would not have done it that way if we knew he was about to die, but we love 'em like crazy now.
Made an emergency vet visit today in fact for an injured foot. Just a sprain, but still cost me $252. My wife cried until I took the dog to the vet.
