Do you have a USB controller?

Are you running Windows and what version?

What do you have?

Do you want to use an NES controller? You could use an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller if you have that.

It's your call on how "real" you want it to be.

Ideally, yes. Or something that feels like one. Ideally.

Do not have, never have had.

Plug one (or two?) nintendo-like controllers into usb port on laptop.

Plug laptop to TV with hdmi cable.

Press buttons on laptop, make game come on. Zelda for instance.

Play Zelda with controller. Be able to save game. Be able to save multiple players like the original. But that would be luxury, if it would just save one player, that would work too.

But not just Zelda. Lots of games! Super Mario. Other games from 8-bit nintendo days.

ETA- added you to smart person list. Don't let me down.

Ok. There are tons of repoduction NES controllers out there. They all suck. Trust me. Some, like the retrolink brand will have a few good reviews but then you realize people played Mario for a few minutes then quit. They do not handle the wear of serious play at all, once you start sweating and mashing buttons, they will fall apart.

So get a real NES controller. Make sure it's original and working. DKOldies.com sells them if you can't find them cheaper elsewhere.

Get (an) adapter(s) from retrotowers.com. The ones on amazon are for repro controllers only.

I really hate to be recommending sites/products that are clearly more expensive, but I know from experience that you'll end up buying them anyways and waste even more money.

Anyway, once you do that. Google fceux. Download and install. Google Nestopia. Download and install. These are your emulators.

Google NES ROMs. Freeroms.com and emuparadise are good ones. These are your games. Download what you want. They should be files ending in .nes

Plug in controller. Go to control panel - game controllers. Make sure it recognizes your controller. If you click properties you should be able to push buttons and see them light up on the diagram.

Also from control panel, go to display options. Make your laptop project on the TV only. Play with the resolutions until it looks good.

Open fceux. Go to the input options and map the buttons. Click open, open game. Regular saving in Zelda should be covered. Idk of any other NES game that has saving. A few games don't work in fceux. Paper-Boy and Top Gun I have discovered. Use Nestopia for them, same steps as above.

Alt+Enter goes to full screen. You may need to play around with the resolution settings in the emulator itself.

Of course, this is only if you must emulate.

If you have the space for a CRT TV and the real thing, that's the way to go.

Genro, thanks for the info.

I went with original system from DKoldies, got Mario 1 and 2, and Zelda.

All work great, but the controller is a repro, and like you said, sucks for Zelda, or anything you need all four directions.

I didn't know it came with repro controller or I would have added original to my order. I've already ordered an original refurb from DK couple of hours ago.

Basically posting to say thanks for the info.

Ghosts N' Goblins is the single hardest game in existence. I've never beaten it. I never will.

First, it's impossible to change directions in the air once you jump so you commit to the jump for at least a couple of seconds. A couple of seconds gets you killed. Without armor takes one hit to kill you, with it takes two.

If you happen to make it to the last level without a certain shield item from level 5 it tells you that you have to go back and boots you to level 5 to go all the way through level 5, 6, and 7.

So wonderful. Against all odds you've managed to make it to the final boss (who is literally the devil). You beat him. Guess what? That wasn't the real Lucifer, and it was all a trick. Guess what you gotta do now?

You gotta start over at the beginning and do it ALL over again this time there are even more enemies and they move faster.

I managed to "beat the game the first time" then when I found out I had to do it over again I just turned it off took the cartridge and buried it in the back of my closet never to see the light of day again.

On NES, my games were Ikari Warriors and the first TMNT.

On Genesis, Streets of Rage and Sonic.

SNES was Donkey Kong, Ivan Stewart's Super Offroad, Batman Forever, F-Zero.

N64 was Star Wars Pod Racer, Shadows of the Empire, Goldeneye, Rogue Squadron, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros.

I'm sure I'm missing some, but these are the ones that stick out.

Loved that logo.

It's funny, I never had a nintendo or sega product when I was a child, I just had an atari and a PS1, but I know own an N64, and SNES, and an emulator that accepts SNES, NES, and Genesis cartridges.
