I'm into old school games. I recommend the Retron system for playing old NES games. They're Cheap China but still more reliable than an original NES console (of which I do have a few). And they're relatively inexpensive. You can get the carts at your Game Stop or Game Xchange for about $5 apiece. Or find them on ebay.

I'm into these old games, too. It's on what I spend my spare dimes and times. I repair the electronics, do the carpentry, the whole nine. I like to buy them cheap and fix them up. I sell the ones I don't want and keep the ones I do.

I've got two workshop buildings (one for the electronics and one for the woodwork) and a rental space full of these things. When we're through remodeling this old house I'll have an arcade room with 25 - 30 games. I'll also have some home consoles/emulators in there. It will be the arcade and family TV room.

My first system well me and my brothers was the nes and it came with super Mario brothers it was awesome. I turned thirty eight today and this was a great thread to remember back to being so excited on Christmas morning and we got a catalog picture of it due to the system was back logged.About a month later it came in and we could never get to play it because my dad loved playing it.

Did anyone here ever have NEC TurboGraphics? I worked as a EE for NEC when I graduated college. I got one of these for free when they came out. It was actually a great system. Had some very good games as well

Retron
Yeah the local game stores are always hawking them. It's an emulation box. Fake controller

Better options (besides the real thing) IMO:

a) Get a real NES (~$20) + Everdrive or Chinese knock-off (every game ever)
b) emulate on computer, get usb adapter for original controller on a site like retrotowers. A regular laptop can run an NES emulator no problem, you can hook that up to a tv

Same goes for any cart-based system

Im sure you've seen it but do you ever watch the angry video game nerd on you tube,it's pretty funny and a nice look back at some of the games that would just drive you nuts.

We still have a couple of those systems and the games to go with them.

They were 16 bit when nobody else was \

There are a lot of unique games for it. Ninja Spirit and the Bonk games in platforming. There's a version of Ninja Gaiden that's identical to the NES with much better graphics. Pretty awesome if you've played the original. And a ton of shooters

The TG16 was a great system. To me it kind of marks the threshold where the priority moved from great gameplay to great graphic output. It was a very good wedding of both.

I could use an electronics engineer. My degree is in philosophy. I literally started this coin-op arcade hobby with a copy of Electronics for Dummies. Literally.

My brother, who has an Art degree, is as we speak becoming an EE at Oregon State. Unfortunately he won't be coming back to Texas until he's old as hell. This per him.

I've learned a lot. I build my own test equipment. (You pretty much have to in this field). Still, there are tons of reasons I'd love to be an EE.

You can use an original controller on it.

I played a lot of N64, but the first game to truly hook me and blow my mind would probably be the original Halo. That game is easily one of the best ever.

Fair enough. I have many other criticisms but let's just avoid the Retron and find common ground

Your impending setup is awesome and I am jealous of it. I'm working on something smaller scale, 10-15 consoles on one CRT TV

I hear ya.

I used to use NESticle and RockNES, among others.

I've done some mental work toward doing exactly what you're talking about. ALL of the good consoles on one TV. Are you talking via emulation or hardware? Either is plausible. Hardware would be cool as hell, but emulation would be A LOT cheaper (software ROMs vs. carts).

Original hardware.

Retained some of the systems from childhood, the rest I got for $20-$50 each. (Except for TG16 I spent $100 on which was complete in box with 10 games) Yard sales and pawn shops, etc. No ebay.

EverDrives, etc: flash carts. Chinese knock-offs as low as $15, but I spent over $100 on NES and N64

AV Splitters and RF splitter: ~$2 each

CRT TV: $20 at Goodwill or free in front of someone's yard

All that still adds up to less than I would spend buying all the actual cartridges, plus I'm not maintaining a PC. Not to mention the incredible amount of shelf space. If you want a huge selection of games, which I do. You get the real thing, not emulation, but don't have to switch out carts.

I have a Donkey Kong. It's one of my prettiest games. I'm not a champ, though. It's just 147,000.

Yours?
