Boxes are basically a necessity in modern society. Local stores get consolidated, and it's hard to impossible to find local stores to get all of what you need.

For most of my staple items, I buy them at Costco. At least, I get good quality stuff at good prices, and they actually treat their employees well. They have many long term employees, and very low turnover costs, which reflects in the prices.

Besides, they tend to take business away from places like Wal-Mart or Grocery chains, instead of locally owned stores.

Gave a guy a ride to the bus station and bought him a ticket. Story seemed legit, said he was in Fayetteville looking for work and his car broke down. He was trying to get back to Fort Smith (50 miles).

If there was no government welfare then I would donate. Seems like double-dipping the way it is.

I like keeping my money in my local community, Hopefully the businesses that I shop\eat at will come buy something from me.

When you shop with big chain stores your money is GONE.

that is weird that they ship all those workers in from "out of town"....I didn't know they did that.

I've given a few people a business card for a temp agency that supplies our business with workers. Tell them all they need to do is be able to pass a drug test and starting pay is $11 per hour. But none of them seem to be interested in actually working for their money.

So do you give money or not?

No. Not going to be the enabler.

Don't have panhandlers in the towns where I usually shop (and yes, that includes Wal-Mart) but I work in downtown Montgomery, AL and get hit up there regularly. If they lead with the "I'm hungry", I make the same offer - walk with me to the Burger King (it is a block away from my building) and I'll buy you anything on the menu.

My offer's been accepted once in 28 years and that guy got the biggest whopper meal on the menu. At best I usually get a 'no thanks'. More often the response is something profane.

I live 3 miles from a Wal Mart in an undisclosed Mississippi location, and in 2 years I have never seen one panhandler.

Ha. Recently I circled back to give these hippie kids who were at the entrance to the mall here a few bucks. I wrapped up two quarters in two bills and rolled down the passenger's window (they were on my right). I yell "here you go" and throw the wad at the ground near them. Dude reaches down to pick it up. I start to pull away, but there was still some chat/sand on the road from a recent ice event, and I spin out, throwing sand/dust all up over the kid. It wasn't on purpose, I was genuinely trying to be nice. My truck has power and the light was green, and there were people behind me.

I tried to be nice.

That's kinda how I feel.

Obesity is associated with poverty. Panhandlers all have some kind of substance abuse issues. Limit welfare and bump up mental health services.

In meridian, it is against the law to panhandle.

Technically, if you give a panhandler money, you are aiding and abetting a criminal in the commission of a crime.

I have given money, so technically I was guilty I guess.

Funny story, we were going into Target in Orange Beach, LA one time and a nice looking young lady, dressed nicely stopped my wife with a story that her boyfriend had thrown her out and she needed bus fare back to Birmingham. The wife gave her $20.00. The lady went into Target straight to the Starbucks counter and ordered a $6.00 coffee.

I laughed and told the wife that she bought Jesus a large coffee.

The wife has not given away any money since.

Seems even the well dressed panhandlers have suitable stories
