First off its "Fidel"....next, no joke. Just thinking that you "young people" think you know what's best for "everyone" after a few "Humanities" classes and you don't know crap...

Not to derail this thread even though I'm not sure it belongs on this board in the first place, but us "young people" didn't decide we know what's best for "everyone." A group of democratically elected leaders within the university said they don't want THEIR university associated with a symbol that is tied strongly to white supremacy and the KKK. They didn't tell you you couldn't fly it on your lawn, hell you can tatoo it on your balls.
That's democracy. That's what this country is about, so go have your dumbass political rants somewhere else.

thank the Almighty we don't have "informed, educated' 20-yr olds running the country...I cant believe the audacity of 18, 19, 20 and 21 year olds thinking they have a "grasp" on life and feel the "oppressed"....GAG! They don't know anything; NOTHING about life. Yep, continue to pass judgment on people and their ways of the 19th century (no, I don't support slavery--what a disgusting thing, even though it still occurs in the world...how about raising hell about that!!) using 21st century logic...Just remember, jerk-wads, the kind of "world" you "think" you want can never be...there will all ways be someone in charge doing what they want...and throughout history, that means killing anyone that gets in the way....anyone. Go ask your buddies about Che, Lenin, Mao, Castro, and the like. You think you are "oppressed" here....go hang out in some place that those guys aforementioned used to run and see if you are "oppressed" or not...so, go to school, do your studies and SHUT UP!!!

Rush, is that you?

The flag represents one group's dominance over another in the past. Isn't America about equal rights?

If this were true then why did a majority of the state already vote to keep it?

Three questions:

1. Do you think the 40% of Mississippi's population that is black like the confederate symbol in their state flag?

2. Do you think the 40% of Mississippi's population that is black have enough votes by themselves to change the state flag?

3. Of all the millions of possibilities of flags that could be adopted by Mississippi with no reference to the Confederacy, don't you think there is one that 99% of the population of the state could accept?

The state flag of Mississippi doesn't HAVE to be controversial. I don't think anyone finds the state flag of Louisiana controversial:

If you really think that flag represents something to be proud of you fail as a human being.

I don't have a comment one way or the other on OM's action, but what I want to know is, does anyone believe this flag is offensive?

Are these dudes racist?

Are you offended by this symbol?

Why?

I guess being offended by a symbol only gives it power and validation.

The confederate battle flag represents exactly what the racists want it to represent. You know why? Would they bother using it if it was benign?

Here's an idea. The gay movement should put aside the rambow flag for a while and take up the battle flag.

How long do you think the racists would associate with that symbol? That would do more to fix the problem than changing the state flag.

Gays have so much power to do good. That is why Aggy is awesome.

James Byrd, Jr. might have found the confederate symbol in Mississippi's flag downright terrifying.

Who are you to tell him he shouldn't've?

It can often represent power of some over others that people in free societies reject.

If that statement is an indication to the limits of your logical thinking, you also fail.

Damn, talk about irrelevant. The same could be said of an Irishman who died at the hands of a Tory. Are we to remove the Union Jack from the Hawaiian flag?
