Actually, most of my work is on the road or on call. I'm not doing "nothing", but I have more downtime than I used to. Perks of owning the place.

Hitler was known to take vacations in his spare time as well. Doesn't sound so good now, does it?

This is what Americans want, though. If we didn't, employers would often include in a benefits package more time off.

If more americans wanted time off, they would deviate towards those jobs in their field that offer it. More employers in the market for labor would respond by offering time off, in order to entice folks to work for them.

I find it odd that people assume that Americans are being "oppressed" in this situation, when it in reality is a reflection of our culture of hard work. It's no coincidence that we are the most innovative, productive, and wealthiest economy int he world.

Also, these stats are misleading. Just because the government doesn't put a gun to an employers head and force paid leave, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Did you read the article? 57% of Americans do not use their vacation time. This is a cultural issue. Employers have discovered that there are better ways to attract labor to work for them than offering excessive time off.

I have no impulse to argue with you though, wheelroute. I have debated you before and we are thousands of miles apart, philosophically. I only have two things to say:

1) I do not think it right to force an employer to lose money by mandating paid leave

2) Just because the government does not initiate violence to bring about paid leave, does not mean it doesn't exist. Some employers use it to entice workers, but most don't, for Americans are culturally more willing to work a lot than Europeans.

A lot of you would benefit from spending more time educating yourselves each day instead of spewing what you think you know about the world. This thread is very sad.

I keep seeing this in the forum, does someone have a link to the actual statistics that prove that 50% support the other 50%.

And who are the 50% being supported? Are we talking retired military, retirees who have contributed to Social Security, are we including Social Security recipients --

I would really appreciate a clear explanation that is truthful

Whether or not it is the correct way to live life, there is no denying that Americans "live to work", while Europeans "work to live".

I think CNN published this article trying to portray business in a bad light as evil and greedy, but I do not think that is the truth.

I tend to favor the European philosophy, but that doesn't mean I have the right to lobby government to enforce that viewpoint. We are a hardworking, productive society, that values material goods to, in my view, an unhealthy extreme.

Also, we must remember that all employees voluntarily work for their respective employer.

50% is too high a projection, but I do think an unhealthy amount of people are dependent on means-tested programs during their working years. Case in point: Appalachia. An economically dying area, the people there, instead of leaving, choose the welfare lifestyle.

That's not an indictment of the people. It's an indictment of the system we have erected. A system that introduces moral hazards and disincentivises employers to hire.

I could not imagine the impact paid leave legislation would have on employer decisions to hire. That is adding thousands and thousands of dollars to employee costs.

1) 47 million Americans are on food stamps. Many are not freeloaders.

2) 62 million on medicaid. Many are not freeloaders

3) 2.1 million households get rental and utility paid for through section 8.

If you look on the wikipedia page for each, there is a section called enrollment that mentions the hard numbers.
