Really? I'd submit that Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama are 3 of the least racists states there are. Blacks and whites in these states tend to have lived their whole lives there and have been forced to deal with racism head on for 50+ years in a way that just about every other area of the country (even other areas of the Southeast) haven't had to. Demographically, blacks and whites in these 3 states HAVE to get along to be able to have successful businesses, etc. Those states don't have people moving in at the rates other Southern states do therefore the political and social order is less volatile than say in Georgia and the Carolinas. The only exception to this in the 3 state area (LA, MS, and AL) is a few pockets in the Appalachia area of North Central and Northeast Alabama where the AA is much smaller and the white population is more insular and suspicious of "others". Talking about your Cullman, Gadsden, and Sand Mountain type areas. The rest of Alabama is no different than Louisiana and Mississippi when it comes to the understanding between blacks and whites.

One thing I will say is that many places outside of the Southeast or major cities in other parts of the country don't really have the perspective to lecture the Deep South on racism. The only major U.S. city outside of the Deep South that mirrors the demographics of many Deep South cities is Detroit and it is a racial hell hole and nightmare. When you see states like Vermont who has a 1% AA population flying a BLM flag alongside the U.S. flag and the Vermont state flag you see just how little perspective some of these lily white areas of the country have when it comes to race relations.

Spot on post. I will add, my stepson from a previous marriage married a mixed girl and now reside in Virginia, he is in the Navy. She and their 13 month old daughter visited a few days a week ago and she said the level of racism is much higher up north.

I've never spent much time in Indiana, but have always heard how racist it is there. I'd say Idaho also has to get a mention. On a national level, obviously.

States with more isolated, insular pockets of people will always be more racist simply because they are suspicious of outsiders and anyone not like themselves.

Racism in the North is different from that in the South. In the North, it's more apartheid-like, separate but equal. In the South, it's more like quarreling neighbors. Neighbors get on each other's nerves but everybody in the neighborhood is alike in their financial and social status.

Someone on here once posted that white northerners like black people as a group, but not individually, and white southerners like black people individually, but not as a group.

My great great grandfather had lots of people that lived on his farm and he paid them in grits, turnip greens, chitterlings and clothes... Some were Italian, others African American but (despite what the history books will EVER tell you) most were caucasian... He also led them to Christianity and provided free housing... In return they cooked and cleaned for his family and did chores around the farm... So it's definitely not Mississippi.

Umm, if you are referring to Auburn's "Samford", then you would be wrong.

Tillman was a Democrat who shares your leftwing politics on class and race, divide people

not sure how a person in Alabama can lecture people about racism given the history of your horrible state

WTF are you even talking about?

I am not lecturing anyone. Your googling skills should easily be able to tell you these things.

I am not the one who chose the screen name of a well known white supremacist though

While you definitely have hardcore racist everywhere, I think the south probably has the least per capita outside out the plains and Utah, Colorado (hippie mountain states)..... the people living in the south have grown up and lived with each other as neighbors, classmates, teammates, etc. The most racist places I've been to were the northeast (Philly, NYC, Boston), Detroit, and LA.

Looks like you get auto corrects too!

I think "in visually" was supposed to be individually.

If so corrected quote here….

quote:

White northerners like black people as a group, but not individually.
White southerners like black people individually, but not as a group.

I like the way whoever said it said it, and it may be very true. Thanks for posting it.

Theoretically, all Italians should have been caucasian but when passing through Ellis Island, if you were from southern Italy they labeled you as BLACK on your immigration papers.

Fly to Logan int. every year to watch a Pats game with family, we make it a point to take south station train to the game in
Foxborough, the way they talk about people of color is appalling.

And they're liberal as they come up there.
