Al Sharpton makes money off controversy, like many media members and sellouts.

I've also had the misfortune of meeting AS in person. He's remarkably ignorant.

Absolutely. But you have to have your schtick and networks developed. So, Larry Klaman files lawsuits and motions all day and solicits funds from those activities. It's a great racket.

It'd pose an interesting dilemma if the police officer were black, but it was going to be a story no matter what.

I really doubt that. Racism (at least as most of the country currently defines it) would be taken out of the story. At worst it would be a story about a bad shooting. The end. No riots (which I think are entirely the result of the justified opinion that the police force has a bad racism problem, because...)

There's something really messed up going on there. 64% black, 94% white police? Those folks need to join the 21st century, or something. No matter what happens or who is at fault that ratio is inviting racism claims. And honestly, I can't see how those claims could be wrong.

Yup.

Not an excuse for hooliganism by any means, but definitely not alleviating any wedges based on color.

An improper ratio will necesarily invite racist claims. Even if the claims are totally unfounded. That's not a problem?

This is a community in flux. I think the ratios are still off, regardless. But 20 years ago, the town was 75% white. Also, blacks should think about voting there.

I think Genro's point is pretty simple.

Let's say that less than 10% of applicants to Ferguson police are African American, how does the force change the racial demographics without applicants?

Just a hypothetical, to be clear.

I'm late to this, so why does it matter what the police demographics are?

Just saying that crying racism at every drop of a hat is part of the problem. It just divides further, pisses off white people and feeds the victim mentality.

Honestly it pisses me off that you feel a need to add this qualifier, which for a white man would go without saying. And it also pisses me off that there are a whole bunch of white boys here who absolutely don't get that statement and think I'm picking on you.

What are ya gonna do? BTHO Rice, that's what.

Could always vote and apply for police positions.

I've got a hunch that most Ferguson community members aren't exactly receptive to police work.

At all.

No argument here.

Meh, look at social media and a LOT of white folks are quick to cry reverse racism at the drop of a hat, too. Goes both ways.

The shame of it all is that when racist stuff actually does occur, one side is ignored because they're perceived as crying wolf, and the other is ignored because they're perceived as brushing it off, and the cycle starts again.

Oh absolutely. White liberals are just as guilty as Al Sharpton types. Doesnt matter where the cause comes from, the effect is the same.

Correct. And that sort of simplistic thinking is in part why the police are all white in Ferguson. Who hires the police chief?

With only three days left in OTB race week the threads are taking some interesting turns. Will the issues of our time be decided before we head into gay week on Monday? Time will only tell.
