The GLBT community spokespeople have been on a rampage in recent years calling out individuals (mostly celebrities) and businesses for their remarks or perceived bigotry against homosexuals and that has created a lot of negative publicity.
I think a lot of networks add in token gay characters because it's the thing to do these days to avoid the wrath of the loud minority. It used to be token black characters, but now it's homosexuals.
There might be some conspiracy out there to desensitize people to homosexuals and homosexuality (I really don't think that's the case), but I think it is really about ratings and preventing public outrage. When it is all boiled down, the TV networks don't care about black, white, or rainbow; they just care about green.
