I've got to say, prior to this thread, I would have never thought about coming down to Birmingham for a weekend. After reading it, I'm pretty intrigued. It sounds like it's really on the come up.
Knoxville is also making a ton of improvements all over downtown and going through our own revitalization. So I can imagine how the Bham faithful feel.
We've got 11 new breweries (on top of the 5 already here) coming downtown over the next 18 months. The city is creating an "Ale Trail" from our old city district up to the Happy holler neighborhood. Where there's going to be between 7-8 breweries with in a mile radius of each other. With the other options going in different districts. We've really been pushing the Asheville model and are shooting to become a lively craft beer and outdoor destination.
Just in case anybody's trying to get their beer on while up here for a game.

Knoxville's a very pretty city and I've been paying close attention to their new downtown revitalization. Planning on taking my boat up there before the summer is up.

I understand we are getting a distillery downtown soon. Looks like they got approval.

I'll be coming to Birmingham on Monday for the same reason I always come to Birmingham.. I 65 takes me to the Emerald Coast.
My brother lives there and says it's pretty cool though... Says all the locals talk about how far the city has come in the last decade... That's true for every Metro City in America though.

We've got a ton of projects going on all around downtown currently. It's an exciting time for the city and has been great to see for it's residents. It sounds like Birmingham and Knoxville both really went full steam ahead with the revitalization efforts about 5-10 years ago. Is that accurate from Bhams stand point?
From a visitors perspective, what does downtown Birmingham excel in? What could they use more of and or do better? (outside of uber)

Where are you launching at? You won't see it this year, but if you visit by river in the next several years you will hopefully have to go under the new pedestrian/biking bridge
quote:
The bridge will span the Tennessee River, connecting South Knoxville’s proposed Riverwalk near Clancy Avenue to downtown Knoxville and UT at Thompson Boling Arena.
City officials see the bridge as an important link in the growing regional greenway network, joining the Fort Dickerson/Urban Wilderness Corridor on the south side of the river to the Neyland greenway on the north. And bigger-picture, the bridge will support key economic development goals for the region— providing access to jobs, improving connectivity, offering transportation options, and opening more opportunities for improved health.
In a nutshell downtown Knoxville is creating the "South Knox water front" a new downtown district across the river from the Henley street bridge. We're building it from the ground up for the most part, or so it seems. So it's going to take some time to develop, but the new river walk that's going in along with the pedestrian bridge seems like a show of good faith, willingness to invest in the area, and continued support from the city to attract the best businesses and attractions possible. That's the plan anyways.
The more I talk about it, the more excited I get for our cities.
Cheers brotha
