This is awesome news! Are there any early plans on repatriating all the Alabamians currently in Tennessee since Birmingham is so cool now?

I'll admit Birmingham isn't the most aesthetically pleasing city, especially driving through on the interstates. But there's a lot to when you actually get into the city, and a lot better looking places you can't see from the interstates.
I visited it during the Birmingham bowl a couple years ago and it still seemed like mostly a dump to me then maybe I just visited the wrong part of it.

Yep.
ETA: Things have improved immensely even in that past couple years. There are a lot of cool new places downtown. Would be nice if they could construct a new venue for the Birmingham Bowl that wasn't Legion Field.

Sorry but your friends are lame and/or poor. The best cities in the Birmingham metro are in Jefferson County. Would also hate that commute.

My wife and I talked about this over the weekend. Saturday night, downtown Bham hosted a sold out heavy weight boxing match, a minor league baseball game, and two Garth Brooks concerts. By all accounts, downtown was packed and all the events were well received. I've lived here all my life. I would have NEVER recommended that anyone move here before. The last 5-10 years have really changed the city. Its a pretty cool place to be now and getting better.
Yeah, we've said this before. More has happened in the last 2-3 years than in the previous 15 years. Birmingham is really coming into it's own.
We aren't Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, etc....but we're definitely heading in the right direction. I went to Garth Friday and the Wilder night Saturday. Downtown was slammed.
Now if we can only get Uber....

Won't happen. One of the city councilmen is the owner of Yellow Cab.

BHam is very Nashville-like these days. It's a good little southern city.

Which is so damn corrupt. Its amazing how one city councilman can completely go against the will of the city. Let's hope the state bypasses her.

He actually did three shows: Friday night and two Saturday night.

The food scene is very up and coming. A couple of James Beard winners, including the granddaddy of them all Frank Stitt. Lots of new things coming for the foodies.
Regions Park is one of the nicest new parks in the country.
Lots of emphasis is being put downtown and it's showing.
I've been here a little over 6 years and it's come a looong way in that span

Food wise, Birmingham is outstanding. Pound for pound, Birmingham has as good of a restaurant scene as almost any other city in the county.

I think it's pretty established. When I moved here 15 years ago, I'd say then it was up and coming. Stitt has been here now 20+ years and Hastings has done his thing at Hot & Hot for nearly that long.

I agree that B'ham is getting much, much better. However, since a city isn't considered "major" in this country until it has pro teams, it does need a legitimate plan to replace Legion Field.

What would replacing Legion Field do to landing a pro team? There's no way this city could support an NFL team. It's too college football centric, and it's so close to Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte and New Orleans.
We could possibly support an MLB team, but I can't see a major league park being built any time soon with Regions Field being so new, so MLB is out. Plus I think the city still owes part of their bill for building Regions.
That leaves NBA and NHL. NHL isn't happening. So we're left with NBA. I actually think an NBA team would do really well here. Just don't think a domed stadium to replace Legion Field is the way to land one.

I have a lot of problems with the majority of the city councilman. Luckily, in my opinion, their days are numbered. Not sure how many posters actually live in the city like I do. The people that are moving into the city are a lot more educated and care a lot more about the city than the people in the past. I've talked to multiple people that have personally written Kim Rafferty about Uber.
There is a new bus system coming to downtown (unsure how quickly that will happen) that is replacing the DART trolleys. Hopefully that works out. Seems like Uber would have a pretty substantial positive effect on the city in a very short amount of time though.
However, the real problem lies in what actually composes "Birmingham" and what places are actually represented by the Birmingham City Council. I live in the yellow. Nobody outside of the yellow, green, pink, or blue really care about Uber or downtown. LINK

Eh.. Birmingham is a tertiary market. I don't want Birmingham to be a "major" city and I don't think many of the citizens do either. I just want Birmingham to be as nice of a tertiary city as possible i.e. Chattanooga.

Chattanooga
The Birmingham area has 1.2 million people. The reason it has problems is because of people who want to govern it like it's still a mid-sized market, like Chattanooga.
Posted on 6/15/15 at 9:58 am to TheDude321
Chattanooga was my example more for the quality of life improvements that have gone on there over the past few years.. Birmingham is a mid-sized market and a 1.2% growth rate over the past few years isn't going to change that.
