America's best

Nixon - Got bot the Russian reds and the Chinese reds to chill out
(best in global fear angle)

Carter - Middle east peace, skunk works (RR took credit), and most humanitarian (best in global peace angle)

worst

Ronald Reagan and George jr - Both were economy wreckers by spending beyond means and passing it off to the next president. George Sr probably gets 2 terms if RR spent less.

You're going to get a lot of bites, but in all seriousness the war on drugs falls squarely on the shoulders of Reagan and his legacy should suffer for it.

This was a Republican bill, passed by Republicans but don't let the facts get in the way of your argument

"Republican" and "Democrat" were basically the opposite of what they are today. For instance...

quote:

The most fervent opposition to the bill came from Senator Strom Thurmond (D-SC): "This so-called Civil Rights Proposals, which the President has sent to Capitol Hill for enactment into law, are unconstitutional, unnecessary, unwise and extend beyond the realm of reason. This is the worst civil-rights package ever presented to the Congress and is reminiscent of the Reconstruction proposals and actions of the radical Republican Congress."

There is not a real of possibility that Strom Thurmond would be a Democrat in today's party makeup.

Claiming credit for something done in your name by someone who was ideologically opposite of you doesn't make it your win.

That's because Nixon made political parties about social issues and the rednecks came all over the GOP

the rest are mostly terrible compared to past presidents. Reagan would be the best but his love for the war on drugs drops him

True. This vote was far more about the region of the representative than the party.

quote:

By party and region

Note: "Southern", as used in this section, refers to members of Congress from the eleven states that made up the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. "Northern" refers to members from the other 39 states, regardless of the geographic location of those states.

The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)

Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85–15%)

The Senate version:
Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%) (only Ralph Yarborough of Texas voted in favor)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%) (John Tower of Texas)

Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%) (only Robert Byrd of West Virginia voted against)
Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)

Best: Nixon. He was an arse but he governed well.

- "Detente" (eased tensions) with the Soviet Union
- Got us out of Vietnam, though it took a while and his methods were...um...Nixonian?
- Fostered better relations with China
- Started the EPA. They may not have a great reputation now but the EPA in its early years was a really great thing. America was polluted as shite.

Worst: Carter. Not really his fault. Too nice a guy who took over during a really tough time.

- General era of civic "malaise"
- Oil crises
- Iran hostage crisis

I'm withholding judgement on the last three or four guys. It's simply too early to judge. Declaring Obama or GWB as "the worst ever" is pretty shortsighted.

Just no (160 yrs ago yes) and using Strom as an example is BS. He wouldn't be in any party today because he was an openly racist tPOS.

This also applies to giving the Dems and LBJ any credit either.....let the facts speak.

In my opinion, there isn't a best president in the last fifty years. Nearly all of them have good points, but conversely all of them have bad points as well.

But worst is an easy pick for me. George W. Bush was hands down the worst president in that time and could be up there for all time as well. Was he handicapped by 9/11 happening just 9 months into his first term? Perhaps. But the choices he and his administration made in the wake of that attack were catastrophic to both our economy and our standing on the world stage.

Nixon by a mile dirty crook who started war on drugs (not RR). Ford not far behind for pardoning Nixon.

Best
Slim pickins (not the actor) Probably Clinton by default because he screwed less shite up than the rest on that list.

Really? Cause when he died in office he didn't have a D next to his name... In fact six months after this bill was passed was when he switched his party affiliation to the Republican party.

I didn't know Nixon started the "war on drugs", for some reason I always associated it with Reagan. Cool, I learned something today.

Not sure how I feel about it. Today I'm against that kind of approach to the drug problem while in the 1970's I probably would have been for it.

Nixon gets a bad rap for the impeachment. Most presidents in the past 50 years have abused the power of their office with impeachable offenses. We're just numb to it now. And we write it off because it's "our guy" or the person we're telling about it writes it off because it's "their guy."

And everyone inside the Beltway laughs at all of us as they consolidate power and wealth to themselves.
