Um, Austin Wiley doesn't have a stepfather.
Just looked at it again and it appears P1 is Austin Wiley, but there is a chance it isn't. I've updated the op. The fbi agent references an unknown man who he believed was P1s step father.

Did Purifoy surprisingly join the team in January? Was he the 9th rated recruit in the country?

Pretty sure Wiley fits the bill more closely for player 1.

Then the writer was confused by some of the personal info on Player 1.

I've tried to clarify or correct the op. I still think P1 is Wiley, but there is a chance it isn't.

In the allegations stepfather is used 3 times in reference to P1. However, the first two times it is in [brackets] and the third time it is referring to an unknown man believed to be the stepfather.

These coaches took bribes, their schools get federal grants so the 'injured party' is the United States of America. Just because you don't think the case warranted federal investigation and prosecution isn't relevant. That's the law and they appear to have broken it.

So Auburn does not have an Athletic Department that is separate from the University like LSU and Bama?

I'm not seeing the overriding legal interest in the US Atorney in Manhattan being interested in anything that happens in OKIE State, So Cal and The Plains of Alabama that involves all participants with their hands out, engaging in otherwise legal conduct.

The question would be, Did the coach take "bribe: or was he solicting a loan?

There has to be a bigger fish in the pond than this stuff. I mean why the USA from the Southern District of NY....when the USAs in Bama are quite capable of handling this, ditto in Tulsa and Los Angeles.

There has to be more to this other than sports apparel companies trying to pay asst coaches to help steer kids to universities .

I've dealt with the US Attorney before; they do pick and chose the cases they want. They are not going after Person and the other coaches by themselves or the financial advisors....now, Adidas maybe

The phone number thing tells me there is more to this than just some steering and few hundreds of thousands of dollars

Because he had the Defendant that was willing to be a witness for a lighter plea deal. Now why he is interested in flipping that witness for a sting operation against cbb, I don't know? Press and career advancement? Trying to get to Sony Vicarro or Phil Knight?

Austin Wiley didn't join the program until middle of December, and he wouldn't have made the trip to play in Madison Square Garden. So player 1 isn't Wiley.

Wiley is likely player 2, because he'd have to stay a whole year before he could go to the league, as Chuck points out.

The way most work is that a part of the salaries are paid from University funds and the rest (usually the biggest chunk) from whatever they call their support group.

That's the real target. This isn't about Chuck Person taking money to steer a kid to an agent or a booster giving money to a recruit. It is about at least one $20 billion dollar company engaging in a nationwide criminal enterprise to get kids on their roster - and IMO that's an easily justifiable reason for federal involvement.

Everybody's asking if any other programs are going to get implicated, but to me the really interesting question will be just how far up the Addidas (and potentially other companies) leadership ladder this goes. It isn't hard to see how this could end up costing them billions of dollars.

You are right. He joined a few days after, so he isn't player 1. He is defiantly the player Person talked about on the phone, but not the one who met the agent in NY. That is probably Heron or Purifoy. P2 is Wiley, Heron or Purifoy.

Everyone knew who Austin's Father was. If the writer believed that the person was the stepfather, then he was so out of touch with the issue he shouldn't write about the subject. Plus if he had any clue the relationship between the Wileys and the Persons, he would have reference it.

Except that isn't anywhere in the description of Player 1.

Person at one point brags about pulling in Wiley to show he has NBA talent players. It doesn't tie player 1 back to that description though

Wiley coudl be player 2 though
