LANE KIFFIN
Pros:
Recruiting
Offensive Play Calling
HC Experience (NFL, SEC, & USC)
Hates Nick Saban
Good Promoter of Program
Excellent Interview
Young with Winning Pedigree
Cons:
Reckless with Media & NCAA
Possibly would bring K. Briles
Only one 10 win season
AU too stuck up to consider him
Not "likeable"
Prefers big city living
I think he would be excellent compared to a pool of "reasonable" candidates. His best years are ahead of him when somebody at a big program gives him a shot again. If he did bring Kendal Briles, it might not be a bad thing considering the Stidham comfort/connection. He won some big games at USC while being mired in the second worse (1st: Penn St.) NCAA sanctions in the past 20 years. The only issue is getting the stuffy BoT to even consider interviewing him...
We need a young, fearless coach with a little swagger about him to help us break out of our funk and be a national power for the next 15 years. Pat Dye was a Bryant assistant and was just what AU needed to end the reign of Bama terror. Kiffin could very well be our next Pat Dye, worth considering...

Ok so let's hire a guy that can't even make the conference championship at USC with an NFL qb. Point made, good talk
You mean the guy who finished AP #5 despite having no senior class, with a QB he developed at USC? The guy who beat both teams who played in Pac12 champ game?
Same guy who is on pace to make Pac12 championship game this year?

Oh make it this year fighting Arizona and Arizona state lol
Agree to disagree come talk to me in 2 years if you stil think this guy is a great coach
Maybe one of your sisters, best friends, cousins in the AD heard we were hiring him. I'll cheer for him

Clay Helton would be a good hire. I don't see a scenario where we could persuade him to come to Auburn though. He is making 3.8m and the way this season is heading, he's headed towards a raise and extension. He would probably flirt with us for leverage in contract negotiations.

The argument is over you saying he is a disappointment which is dumb AF as I pointed out
If you are arguing that we don't know if he is a good coach yet, you won't hear me disagreeing. Too early to tell
The point doesnt matter anyways, he won't leave USC for AU unless he disappoints there. If he disappoints there, we don't want him

I don't expect us to go after him - but he's the sort of HC we SHOULD go after. All this Chip Kelly/Jon Gruden nonsense is truly a (crack)pipe dream. Our chances of pulling Helton from USC, while infinitesimally small, are still an order of magnitude greater than many of the names mentioned ITT.
The only concern I would have about Helton would be the one thing that might make him consider coming here- his AU ties. I really feel we need to break with the past this time, hire someone who has no history with the program (other than possibly competing against it) and give them enough responsibility to run it without interference.

Literally don't want ANY of those guys.
I'd rather be looking at Frost, Fuente, Fleck, and Brohm.

I'm all aboard the Lane train. In fact, I'm the captain.

I don't get this? Someone explain to me why Mullen would be a good hire???

He would be a "safe" hire. Probably guaranteed 8 wins a year. Hiring mullen would be like conceding to mediocrity IMO

Wouldn't we be bullet proof with Lane? Bring in a big bagman and if anything comes from the NCAA he can roll on Saban.

Good analysis!!!
None of names so far fire me up but Stoops. I think Kelly would be Gus 2.0, Petrino used to but he seems to crap the bed in the big games so I'm not sure he wouldn't do the same here.

I don't want Mullen, but the argument points to Mullen captaining the winningest stretch in MSU history during his tenure

I'd point out that Nick Saban was hired at LSU from Michigan St after going
95- 6-5-1
96- 6-6
97- 7-5
98- 6-6
99- 9-2

I don’t think he would be a bad hire. He is killing it in recruiting ATM (considering). I just personally think we should offer a few top guys 10 MM a year, and make them say no.
ETA:
For a long term solution, I would be good with keeping Gus another year and firing JJ. Get a great AD, and allow him to evaluate the situation.

WTF
Gus beat Petrino with JJ. Petrino is presently on course to make the Sun Bowl with Lamar Jackson at QB.
Kiffin is a train wreck.
Venables is a decent option if we go coordinator, but there is no basis for putting him near the top of the overall list.
Mullen is ripe for another job, but at a lower level than AU.
