What makes you think he would leave USCw for Auburn

Yeah it's a lot shot, I get it, but he had this to say this past July:

quote:

I grew up in the southeast and my dad coached at the University of Florida, University of Miami, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and I had gone to high school in Houston,” Helton said on ESPN 106.7 in Auburn. “I was being recruited by some Texas schools coming late in the recruiting process. I had the opportunity to get the scholarship offer from Auburn and went out there and it was the perfect fit.

quote:

Between myself and my high school sweetheart, Angela — we later became husband and wife — we had the best time of our lives at Auburn. We made not only some special memories but also some unbelievable friends. … Just very fortunate to be a part of the Auburn family for the time that we were there. It is a place that’s very near and dear to my heart. One of the reasons is because of Coach Dye. I talked about my father, but while I was at college, Coach Dye was like a second father to me, and his staff took care of me and my wife while we were there.”

We could do worse than Helton.

I doubt he's making more than we are currently paying Gustav. And the lure of working and living in the LA area doesn't really seem like it fits his personality.

That said, it's a long shot. They are in a great position in the PAC12, with most of the rest of the HCs either in their first years or on the hot seat, and they'll always have a recruiting advantage. Be hard to leave that for the clowncar that is AU Athletics right now.

Bill Clark, COME ON DOWN! You're the next contestant on, "Welcome to mediocrity". Now, what is the score that you get closest to LSU, UGA, and UA without going over?

USCw is probably one of 5 or 6 schools that even an AU alum isn't leaving for a lateral position at AU. If it were any other PAC-12 school or Big-12 school, I think Helton comes for sure. But being the HC at USCw is a big deal.

Surprised Butch Davis' name hasn't come up.

Established HC with multiple championships.

Track record of developing elite NFL LEVEL players

Could be bought for next to nothing.

I like this suggestion. But he is 65 already. It would be a short term hire, but could produce a championship. And the talent infusion would be crazy.

What about Phillip Montgomery at Tulsa or Mike Bobo? Tulsa runs a similar offense to ours with Tempo. Bobo very familiar with the conference and recruiting. Also the last time we hire a former UGA player that worked out well.

Philip Montgomery enters his third season as head football coach at The University of Tulsa in 2017. He led his first two teams to consecutive bowl game appearances and guided the 2016 team to a 10-win season, the 10th double-digit win campaign in school history.

He was Offensive Coordinator at Baylor before taking the Tulsa job.

Tulsa's record isn't great this year, but outside the Tulane loss their other 4Ls were vs good opponents are a FG loss

Got to keep in mind Tulsa isn't some hotbed for football

They've been good for a long time, currently a terrible record. Not a coach we would hire

You consider a team that only won 5 games in the two years before he showed up "good"

He won >3x (16W) as many games in years 1+2 than the two years previous, with near majority of losses to final top 25 teams

His 2015 season had 4/6 losses to final top 25 teams
His 2016 season had 3/3 losses to top 25 teams

This year, 3/5 losses are to

5-1 Toledo: Only loss to #8 Miami
5-1 Navy: Only loss to #24 Memphis
4-1 #14 Okie State:

Every coach has a bad loss on their record.

To compare to Mike Bobo is a joke. Colorado St plays significantly inferior competitoin, Bobo inherited a better team and has won less

You respond to the wrong person on this one?

I never said I wanted either. Montgomery > Bobo though and is a 1-2 more good years from a midlevel P5 Job like a Texas Tech

Who is your glorious candidate? You clearly don't realize that every realistic candidate for Auburn will have flaws

No idea right now, every realistic candidate has some flaw at the moment whether experience, resume or fit

I do not ever want to hire Bobo

I don't see Phillip Montgomery being a good hire at this stage of his HC career. I just think he is on track for a P5 jump with 1-2 quality years

You still never answered my question. You have been b*tching all over this board and act like we should hire Belichick

Who is a great hire that is a surefire winner at Auburn? (Spoiler: That doesn't exist)

Venables. Helton is the main target.
