Newly offered tight end John Samuel Shenker details Auburn official visit plan (SECCountry)
quote:

John Samuel Shenker’s recruitment is coming full circle.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end out of Moultrie (Ga.) began conversations with Auburn during his sophomore year of high school — as a baseball player. Shenker committed to the baseball Tigers that school year. About a year and a half ago, Shenker de-committed when he decided to take the football route at the next level.

Spencer’s recruitment picked up with communication with several schools. He started talking with Auburn tight ends coach Scott Fountain shortly after Landon Rice left the program. Early in 2017, Shenker has received offers from Western Kentucky, Wake Forest and FAU. He took an official visit to Georgia Southern.

On Monday, new Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey stopped by to see Shenker and extended the tight end an offer.

“Well it’s kind of funny that it happened this way,” Shenker said. “Oh, I was so happy. It’s a great school. It’s the school I always wanted to go to when I was a young little boy. It was a great feeling (to get the offer). … I didn’t think it would happen as a football player.”

Lindsey’s first 2017 offer since taking over as offensive coordinator gives some insight into what he wants from the position. Auburn has hesitated with fullback Chase Lasater, which shows the Tigers might go in another direction. Lasater said Sunday that part of the holdup was the Tigers’ potential desire to add another tight end instead of a fullback. Shenker’s offer supports that theory.

But Shenker sees himself more as the blocking type. Under head coach Rush Propst at Colquitt County, Shenker served in an H-back-type role, which included mostly blocking responsibilities. He was split out wide at times and offers that versatility if requested, though the addition of the pass-catching Salvatore Cannella in this class makes Shenker feel like a yin-and-yang addition at tight end.

Lindsey told Shenker he’d use him primarily as a blocker.

“He said he thought I was a guy who could do a lot of different things. I can block down the field. I can block and be an H-back. I can be a tight end. They can split me out, so that’s what he’s looking for,” Shenker said. “I’m more of a H-back blocking. During my high school career, I’m mostly doing motion stuff at H-back. I’m more in the trenches.”

South's Top 150 for 2017 (Scout)
quote:

Strongest Positions

When breaking down the Top 150 in the South, here are the five strongest positions out of that group.

1. Wide receiver: 21
2. Safety: 17
3. Athlete: 15
4. Cornerback: 14
5. Offensive tackle: 14

When talking the five stars, the strongest group was in the trenches on the offensive line with Alabama commit Alex Leatherwood, Tennessee commit Trey Smith and Tedarrell Slaton leading the way in the South.

Schools Who Have Most Commitments

With the SEC recruiting the South extremely hard year in and year out, it is no surprise that the majority on the top of this list plays in that conference.

Georgia is putting together its first full recruiting class under Kirby Smart, and this should go down at the Bulldogs' best class in the modern era. They lead here with Alabama next. The Crimson Tide recruits much more nationally than Georgia. Auburn, Clemson, Florida, LSU and Florida State are the next five.

Georgia: 18
Alabama: 11
Auburn: 8
Clemson: 8
Florida: 8
LSU: 8
Florida State: 8

State by State Breakdown

As always, Florida leads the way here in the South, and the state overall is producing over 400 Division 1 football prospects yearly. Georgia has cemented itself as a top four state when talking top football prospects and the surprise state, with a very strong top 50 this year is Alabama.

Here is the breakdown by state in the region's Top 150.

Alabama: 19
Arkansas: 2
Florida: 48
Georgia: 39
Louisiana: 14
Mississippi: 8
North Carolina: 8
South Carolina: 3
Tennessee: 9

Scout's Top 25 Recruiting Classes (Scout)
quote:

9. Auburn Tigers

Former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham and four-star JUCO running back Octavius Matthews, a top ten national prospect, give this team two top end additions on offense. The twin towers of five-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley and four-star counterpart Austin Troxell will be of interest to both Stidham and Matthews. Much of the class' top-ranked commits are on offense, but linebacker Tadarian Moultry and safety Carlito Gonzalez bring talent to the defensive side as well.

Doesnt matter, his point remains. Doesnt matter if you know what is coming if you are unable to stop it anyway.

Everyone knew what was coming, just couldnt do anything about it. Which is why it is the perfect offense

That's not what we are doing.... Our run game will more than likely look the same next season. Instead you might see different formations (pistol) and see more drop back passes. We won't be running a completely different offense in 2017 but it will at times look different. Namely I expect we don't just throw when we have to and that we see more zone running concepts (which we already do) but this isn't a rebuild

What a way to piss on my joke. It's pretty obvious who the angry little man around here is actually. Step in line though. I have made a lot of people butthurt on here.

If it is different from run up the middle on 1st down, run up the middle on 2nd down, do a dumbass play-action pass on 3rd and long (which nobody is ever fooled by), then I'm all for it.

My kid played baseball with this kid while they were here in Bham. The kid is fricking legit. His dad is a class act too and wouldn't hesitate to speak to people.

The whirly bird had a surprising high success rate for a play everyone all knew was coming.

I still maintain that as a 1st down play, the whirlybird will be killer. Even Clemson ran it in the national championship game against the Gumps.

It is a gadget play. Just like the hidden rb play we tried, or the flea flicker. It is meant to catch the defense off guard.

How so? Orbit motion is not really a gadget. Say it ran several times in the both championship games this past weekend.

I just fricking love when we play-action to 2 rbs prior to dropping back on 3rd and 18. Never mind the pass rush barreling in on us we better fake it to 2 guys first. Maybe they'll bite on the fake when we have 18 yards to gain.

Cubelic even posted the other day how Lindsey was going to bring the straight drop back pass back to AU. Something we NEVER do.
