KN says 4* ATH Alaric Williams has made "significant progress" in his academics. Staff will accept his NLI on signing day which apparently wasn't a certainty too long ago. That means staff feels pretty good he will get qualified. I am guessing Williams will be one of last to enroll and will have to do some summer stuff but sounds like things are going right direction

Transferred to Beauregard from Opelika because of academics iirc, doubt he's going anywhere but JUCO

Anyone know what happened to Anfernee McGriff? The athlete out of Florida we had committed for a while, but let go secondary to grade concerns? I remember him committing to Florida but going to Junior College.

ETA: or was it D'anfernee McGriff? Weird first name.

He's at a JUCO in Iowa. I believe he's eligible in next year's class.

There were some rumblings on the paysites that we may be adding a JUCO wr a week or so ago. I assumed they were talking about McGriff.

He left on weird terms to UF tho and our staFF is completely different from the guys he knew so I dunno

I'd like to see Auburn add him back when possible. He runs like a deer for a bigger guy.

KN says Malzahn, Horton & Lindsey visited 4* RB Devan Barrett yesterday. Visit went well as Lindsey explained how Barrett could be used in the offense. Barrett says he's solid. The biggest news is the only other official visit he will take is to Indiana. If that holds then AU will be good. Only will be concerned if he takes a midweek Clemson official

KN also had an update on 4* DE Markaviest Bryant yesterday. Says AU is in it more than people realize. LSU sources before visit thought UGA was all they really had to beat but after visit think AU is a legitimate threat to land him. LSU is now surging and tyring to get into this one late. Malzahn, Steele & Garner visited him in home yesterday. Bryant is visiting Arkansas today until Friday then he will be at AU

Auburn commit Carlito Gonzalez stays committed through 5 coaches (SECCountry)
quote:

Since 2015, there hasn’t been much continuity for defensive backs. The first defensive coordinator Carlito Gonzalez committed to in August 2015, Will Muschamp, split to become the head coach at South Carolina after a season. Defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson went with him. Gonzalez’s next secondary coach, Wesley McGriff, was in and out after one year on the Plains, as well.

All parties have been exchanged with valuable replacements Kevin Steele and Greg Brown, but that’s a lot of change for a teenager.

Gonzalez stayed true to his commitment through all of it. That’s his nature.

“I’ve always been loyal since I’ve been young. Even when my friends got me in trouble, they wouldn’t even lie to my dad. I would be the one to lie to my dad,” Gonzalez said. “It’s just loyalty, and it pays off in the end.”

It hasn’t been easy, he admits, especially during the most recent switch.

Gonzalez always liked Muschamp and Robinson, but they came along so early in his process that it seemed easier to move past when that duo darted for Columbia. McGriff was the night-light through the remaining darkness in Gonzalez’s recruitment. McGriff reassured Gonzalez that Auburn was a no-brainer for him. That move stung.

But it only took one meeting with Brown to convince him that Gus Malzahn will continue to hire the right position coaches for him.

“He’s a very nice person, very down-to-earth guy. He coached Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Landon Collins. When I found that out I was like, ‘Wow,’ because those are two players I look up to, and they’re both safeties,” Gonzalez said. “He’s just a very down-to-earth person, and he’s cool all the time. I feel like it’s going to be great.”

The 6-foot, 190-pound safety is one of Auburn’s most diamond-in-the-rough gems in the 2017 class. He looks built to step on an SEC football field already. His hard-hitting highlight tape shows Gonzalez will bring a head-chasing mentality to the league for years.

‘110 percent committed’ to Auburn, 4-star WR Noah Igbinoghene ready to run in two sports (SECCountry)
quote:

Noah Igbinoghene said the recruiting process was like a weight on his shoulders. But after his official visit to the Plains, the 4-star wide receiver feels light on his speedy feet and ready to take off with the Tigers.

“I’m 110 percent committed here,” Igbinoghene said last Sunday. “I didn’t think I was going anywhere anyway, but just to solidify it I’m not going anywhere. I’m glad it’s over with.”

Igbinoghene is currently Auburn’s lone wide receiver commitment for the class of 2017, which will officially sign next Wednesday. With 8 of Auburn’s top 10 receivers returning this fall, Auburn didn’t need to take a lot of talent at the position in this cycle.

But the Tigers knew they wanted Igbinoghene, an in-state star from Hewitt-Trussville High School. Igbinoghene committed on Thanksgiving Day last November, adding a versatile speedster to the class.

Over the weekend, Igbinoghene met with Auburn’s new offensive coordinator, Chip Lindsey, for the first time.

“Just talking to him the first time I saw him, he was just a very nice guy,” Lindsey said. “You can see he cares about all of us and loves all of us. I really like that. … I like (Lindsey’s passing game). I’m a wide receiver, that’s what we like to do.”

Igbinoghene’s excitement to hit the ground running with the Tigers comes in two sports, too. He will be on the Tigers’ football team and the track team. Igbinoghene spent some time during his official visit meeting with Auburn head track coach Ralph Spry and horizontal jumps coach Greg Stringer.

“I can’t wait to do track here, too,” Igbinoghene said. “(Spry is) a very nice guy. He jumped real far, and that’s what I want to do. He’s been there so he’s going to get me there.”

Uncommitted spotlight: Predictions on four Southeast prospects (Rivals)
quote:

4* LB Tyler Taylor

Despite being ranked in the Rivals250 for nearly a year, Taylor hasn’t received the type of publicity that other recruits have garnered. But with LSU, Oklahoma and Auburn all battling for his services, there’s no doubt he’s well deserving of attention. Taylor kept a low profile following visits to all three schools and right now all three view him as an important member of the class. However, Auburn has been the one consistent in his recruitment and after getting the last official visit, the Tigers have the advantage.

Prediction: Auburn

Flip from UNC to Auburn a 'no-brainer' for Traivon Leonard (AL.com)
quote:

After flipping his commitment from North Carolina to Auburn last month, cornerback Traivon Leonard took his official visit to the Plains last weekend.

When it was over, the standout from West Palm Beach, Fla., explained the decision to step away from the Tar Heels and join the Tigers was not a difficult one. It was actually his third pledge, as he was previously committed to Florida Atlantic.

"Definitely the atmosphere and the family feeling you get here," Leonard said of Auburn. "It's closer to home, and obviously my mom. My mom did go here, so it's a no-brainer."

Just four days after he committed to Auburn, former Tigers secondary coach Wesley McGriff left to become the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. That opened the door for a late push from Florida, but on Sunday Leonard announced his decision is final after spending time on the Plains with his coaches and fellow commits.

Leonard said he "clicked pretty fast" with the other recruits and is eager to prove himself to McGriff's successor, Greg Brown.

Chip Lindsey's 1st offer at Auburn goes to combo recruit John Samuel Shenker (AL.com)
quote:

Two days after his hire, Lindsey doled out his first offer to John Samuel Shenker, who could help Auburn's speed if he ends up committing. The Moultrie, Ga., native told AL.com Tuesday he plays tight end, H-back and receiver, and Lindsey has a need for that kind of versatility.

"I was really honored and excited," Shenker said. "Coach Lindsey thought I fit his style of play-calling perfectly because they run a lot of stuff where they use only one tight end. When they do that, they don't want to rotate people in... If I can do all three things they don't have to rotate so it can be a fast-paced offense."

Shenker is ranked as a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 97 tight end in the 247Sports Composite. He caught 30 passes for 451 yards and two touchdowns as a senior at Colquitt County High School last fall. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder was previously committed to baseball at Auburn, but changed his mind as a junior when he decided to focus on more on the gridiron.

"I think I just got wore out with baseball because I played it so much when I was little," he said. "I did it too much. Then I started playing football and it wasn't as old to me so I'm really enjoying it."

Shenker will return to the Plains this weekend for his official visit, and didn't rule out a commitment. However, Lane Kiffin at Florida Atlantic and Mike Sanford Jr. at Western Kentucky are also interested in his services.

Shenker officially visited WKU last weekend and said he might check out FAU before he arrives in Auburn Friday. The Tigers and Hilltoppers are "pretty much even" for Shenker while the Owls are "a little bit behind" because he hasn't visited the campus yet.

I like the sound of that. One of the most frustrating things for me past 2 seasons has been the amount of substitutions at times. Also LOL at us being "even with Western Kentucky". I don't see that staying for long after this weekend

Alright people we are officially one week away from NSD. We have 20 committed though Bill Taylor will take a blueshirt so with a target of 25 we can sign 6 players. I honestly don't know who the last 1-2 guys will be but here's where we stand right now

Top Targets
4* S Devon Hunter (Committed to VT last week but staff might still visit. Trying to get him on campus this last weekend but seems like a real long shot)
4* WR Oliver Martin (Was supposed to visit this past weekend but Ohio State got him instead. I think AU still trying to get him on campus this weekend but seems doubtful now)
4* DE Markaviest Bryant (UGA/AU/LSU battle, Dawgs still the leaders but some think that both set of Tigers have a decent shot at this. AU gets his last official visit)
4* DE Ryan Johnson (AU/STAN battle, was accepted to Stanford last week plans on having decision either Friday or Monday)
4* LB Tyler Taylor (AU/LSU battle, with LSU trending due to playing time opportunities still mom likes AU & Taylor close with T-WILL. Should have decision this week)
4* OT Kai-Leon Herbert (AU/UF/MIA battle. Some think AU is already out of it)
3* TE John Samuel Shenker (received AU offer this week and plans to officially visit this weekend)

Names to Watch
3* OT Jordan Tucker (recently committed to UNC but could be a late target for AU)
3* OG Poutasi Poutasi (doesn't have AU offer but with OL list dwindling could receive a late offer)
3* FB Chase Lasater (seemed set to commit until Lindsey was hired, now probably won't get commitable offer)
3* WR Jafar Armstrong (Mizzou commit that recently has gotten attention from AU staff. Unless he visits this weekend doubt anything comes of it)
3* TE Kemari Averett (Mixed reports on whether or not the Louisville commit will officially visit this weekend)
3* WR Marlon Williams (Former USC commit that was getting some attention from AU but recent reports make it seem unlikely Tigers push)
3* OL Matthew Tanner (JUCO OL that AU has had talks with, another possible late OL target)

I imagine some more late names might pop up especially at WR. With back counting on the chopping block I think AU will try hard to fill all 6 spots but we will see. Will be interesting to see who all makes officials this weekend. As of now the only NSD announcement with AU involved would be Markaviest Bryant so this will probably be one of the more quiet signing days under Malzahn unless something happens over the weekend. At this point doubt we end up with a top 10 class due to losing Hunter late but would have a shot at it if we land trio of Taylor/Johnson/Bryant. I like our chances with Johnson & Taylor but gonna need a big weekend to get Bryant

FYI I won't be able to run the NSD thread this year because there will be stretches throughout the day I won't be available. But I do plan on running the 2018 football recruiting thread so will have a post up for that sometime in the afternoon on NSD

What I get from this is that Saban will call Tuesday night before SD and he will send in his LOI the next morning.

So we have six slots and we think we can account for three with:
Shekner
Taylor
Johnson
( If we lose one of the last two, our class will be a joke for sure.)
And the next three slots seem to be a crapshoot between juco linemen, no-named TE's, and backup plan to the backup plan WRs.
