We really like the idea of BW playing defense. From what I was told Sherrill putting high school QBs on the defense when we couldn't recruit elite defensive talent is what turned this program around in the 80's. We want a sign that we turned a corner, and BW's passion and drive really gives us all hope.

i'm not comparing slim to woodson (skill wise), but just thought it would be a cool comparison to bring up if he plays some offense as well.

i am completely jacked about watching williams play cb.

First off, not guzzling the cool aide =/= BAS.

However, I would find it highly unlikely that BW, even with his amazing athleticism, would be even an average option at CB for us.

Well if he's not then we may be starting to below avg to avg CBs.

concerned about his agility? change of direction? coming out of a break?

me too, but i'm just assuming chavis had a hand in wanting him on the defensive side of the ball.

he does have excellent speed, size and length for the position. we'll see how much wiggle he has.

i don't think they asked him if he wanted to play cb because they didn't think he could, it's not as if he's a bad option at rb.

I mean, ffs we've got people discussing comparisons of Slim to Charles Woodson

Lots of posters are migrating back for the season to, so that's affecting the quantity.

Other than that, it's just that creeper koolaid

I expect him to have moments of brilliance and moments where he makes some big mistakes with his lack of experience at the spot

I would love nothing more than to be completely wrong about my previous statement.

First year defensive backs, who played the position all through high school and were recruited to play the position, have a very tough time for the most part. Especially in a league which contains arguably the most talented WR's in the country.

I just think that has to be taken into consideration. Again, I hope that I am wrong.

Seeing the positive reaction of McCulloch and Agim is encouraging. And I find the fact that Slim was voted a defensive co-captain encouraging, too. I can understand being very skeptical of coaches pumping up the performance of players in camp. As I believe tmc posted earlier, the staff really needed Slim to buy into the move, so they would tend to be extremely supportive of him, particularly in public. But I don't see how his fellow defenders vote for him as co-captain unless he is at least busting his arse and having some success.

So if he's just an average SEC CB, that will be better performance than what we've seen lately. Couple that with reports that Harvey has looked good, and that Harris has looked better than everyone, gives me hope that we may actually have a solid secondary.

...also, it's more fun to think about units that may exceed expectations (Secondary) than it is to worry about units that may not live up to expectations (the OL).

cb is a rough position to play. i just can't wait to see bw plays it because i'm curious about how the transition will work.

i remember saban moving cory webster from wr to cb his freshman year (or maybe soph) and he did fine his first year at cb and was a rb in high school. so i think chavis knows what he's looking at. i can't imagine he'd want bw at cb if he didn't think he could play it. i mean, the man knows cbs.

as far as comparing him to woodson or thinking he's gonna be an all american or some such? c'mon man. i'm just having some fun.

Hey I'm not trying to piss in y'alls koolaid I was just trying to figure out what I missed

As my way of apologizing, I'll line up the shot glasses. Let's talk defense. Here's my best guess on depth chart right now. We'll play a lot more people than we have in past seasons so most of these guys will play fairly significant minutes.

DE - Garrett (SO), Johnson (SO)
DT - Williams (SR), Washington (RS FR) OR Walker (JR)
DT - Obioha (SR), Mack (FR), Henderson (SO)
DE - Hall (JR), Cunningham (SO)

DL is elite. It didn't happen overnight but it's there. It's my belief Obioha will start and the 2nd series Mack will come on. Alonzo will be your primary and probably play more than any of them. I went 3-deep on Henderson because he's going to play. Also against the more physical teams, Obioha will probably move to DE so we're going to need more DTs. Lockhart plays. Think we'll redshirt Keke.

SLB - Washington (JR), Moore (FR)
MLB - Walker (SO), Hilliard (JR)
WLB - Alaka (SO), George (JR)

DL play has them getting clean looks in practice so they appear to be playing above their talent level. Not entirely convinced this part will transition to the season but I think they'll be solid enough and they will make plays, something we've been sorely missing. Not saying Alaka will or won't miss time but when healthy he's clearly the starter. Though I've heard they are fairly happy with the fish, the depth here is still questionable to me. I think Riley Garner is going to play. I'm not sure on Durham but I think he'll play. We're just too thin. I think we'll redshirt Thomas.

CB - Harris (SR), Davis (SO) OR Sezer (JR)
CB - Harvey (SO), Williams (SR)

The coaching staff has felt all along CB would come together and apparently it has. Davis missed a bit of time and it cost him. Harvey has impressed everyone this fall and has made a large leap. This style of CB play puts an emphasis on physical ability and while Harvey isn't the tallest, he's got elite speed and change of direction. And he's finally bought in fully on the effort side. Brandon Williams is going to need to play, especially when we take on the bigger WRs down the line. But I think Harvey will get the nod in NRG. Williams has a massive learning curve to deal with and he really is playing well, but they are likely to ease him in. He was voted captain because BW is the heart and soul of this team. He's just a natural leader and brings a spark to everyone around him. I've heard almost nothing on Elam or DCS other than DCS ran 2nd team CB one day in practice. At this point, I think both will shirt which says a lot about how well the guys in front of them are playing.

NB - Ellis (SO) OR Wilson (SO)
FS - Evans (JR), Dunning (FR)
SS - Watts (SO), Burns (SR)

When you hear them talk about speed, they are really referring to safety play. I don't think Ags even know what elite safety play looks like any more but you're about to find out. These guys are absolutely flying around in practice and every time I hear anything, it's about how good the safeties look. At NB we'll probably match up depending on personnel with the better cover guy in Ellis or the bigger guy in Wilson. Both have played well and I expect in the 6-DB Mustang package, both will be on the field. Much has been made of Dunning this fall and it's really just bringing him along. He's got great natural FS instincts in the body of an OLB. In any other year, you force him on the field. Watts has been labeled most improved. I asked about that pic and was told, yes, he does in fact look like a mini-Myles and that "if you just walked up to him, you'd think he was a LB, not a safety. NFL looking guy." Prior to last year Watts was labeled by recruiting sites as too slow for CB, too small for S. We've all seen his game speed. Now he's physically the part too. Pryor probably redshirts.

Overall I think this will be the best defense we've fielded in quite some time. It's still fairly young though so it'll likely have its moments when it gets knocked around and seems lost. I don't think any freshmen will start and no walk-ons are in the 2-deep. Those are both firsts in the Sumlin era

Just a random CGSC observation but Defensive starters by recruiting class (incl nickel so 12) assuming my lineup is accurate

2011 - none
2012 - 3 (Obioha, ZWilliams, Harris)
2013 - 3 (Hall, SWashington, Ellis)
2014 - 5 (Garrett, Alaka, JWalker, Watts, Harvey)
2015 - 1 (Evans)

we pretty much got excited about slim being voted a captain. i think that's when it took off. we just kinda ran with it is all. kinda like a kool-aid stampede.

as far as your observations on defense, i fall in line with that, though as far as going 1st or 2nd string at some positions idk, but as far as 2 deep yeah, more or less.

i think our two biggest concerns are injuries (overall of course) specifically at lb and cb. i'm actually praying we can get avg lb play this year, and if we get the injury bug there i think it could get ugly (by chavis standards).

i think our cbs are gonna get a lot of help from our beastly dline and very good safeties.

we are 3 deep at DT(which you just about have to be for rotation and injuries) and i think that makes this defense night and day compared to what it would be, if say, we only had 2 or 3 people to play DT. i think a fresh daylon mack on third down is a nightmare.

if we stay healthy at lb and really do have a 3 deep rotation at DT then we are gonna have good defense, certainly a big improvement at the least.

think we see obioha and mack together on third down?

what about packages with 3 safties in the nickel, or maybe a 4-2 with a rover as base against spread teams, instead of ellis in at nb?
