It was halfway tongue-in-cheek, but it's a fact that Nick gets tight as hell in high pressure games, and it affects him.
This is not exclusive to Saban..

Sometimes, and sometimes they lay it down great in tight games.
I think saying he is the least clutch is a little far fetched. I can't think of very many totally boneheaded calls he has made to give him that moniker.

Didn't really follow Wisky when Bert was there, but so far in the SEC, Bert has lost every close game. I realize sample size is small but he was 0-5 last year and the loss in 13 to LSU was close and maybe with others as well.

Richt. How is this a question? I respect the man a great deal and of course wed love to have him at Kentucky, but with all the beasts that have come through Athens, how the frick has he not won an SEC title?

Guess when you win 30-0 you get no "clutch" points
Being at one of the top jobs in the country and not winning even your conference in a decade is what gets your zero "clutch" points.

That, and being 2-3 in the title game with 2 blowout losses.
Though, he did curb stomp both teams when he won it.

If the loss was a blowout, how is that not clutch? If we got mudholed, we simply got vastly outplayed by a better team.
12 I'll give you, people have every right and reason to say that "wasn't clutch". But 03 and 11 were both average teams that won a down east, and lost to a team that either played in or won the national title. I'd say that's different.

Getting to the title game and not even competing in it is just as unclutch as shitting the bed in the final minutes IMO.
I don't think Richt is the least clutch though. I was just adding to the previous poster's statement.

I just don't see it. I mean "clutch", to me, implies the time when the game is on the line and it's do or die. If you are playing a clearly better team, and lose by multiple touchdowns, I don't really see that as anti-clutch, I just see it as you got whipped that day.

When it's a regular game, sure. When it's a championship game, I see it as "un-clutch".
Being clutch is a combination of both IMO. Making the big play, and showing up when the lights are the brightest.

Saban has had only one WTF? moment I can think of in recent years and that was the final drive against Ohio State in the semi-final. We had over a minute left with a time out or two and we were being very conservative with the football. It's like we were giving the game to OSU at that point.

if clutch is winning close 3pt or less games then only Richt, Miles, Sumlin and Saban win over 60% of their close games. All other SEC coaches including Meyer and Spurrier are 50% or below in close games javascript:AddSmileyIcon(' ')

Or let's say, the game is tied, and a missed FG is returned with no time left on the clock for a TD and you win by 6 points, then that doesn't show up in your analysis either?

Richt is pretty "unclutch". Perfect example is last season vs GT. What other coach in the SEC woulda squib kicked it?
Posted on 5/22/15 at 4:57 pm to joeyb147
no, if 7 pts was looked at probably would be similar. When Spurrier was at Florida he just had very few close games. He was crushing everyone.
Most using clutch here to mean championship coaches I think, not winning when outcome is in doubt
