Ridiculous contract. Just because you HAVE money doesn't mean you have to spend it.

Every coach from the 70s think that every coach in college is being overpaid now. I really don't understand why fans from other schools have any issue with how much Bama pays their employees.

I don't get this critique. Isn't that like doubting Greg Louganis' ability to do a cannonball or if Lance Armstrong can ride a tricycle? We're not talking Lawrence Frank, who never even made his HS team. AJ went through the recruiting process as a player and as a parent. Certainly those experiences will aide him in recruiting. AJ won't be a stranger to the politics of campus life or dealing with prima donna antics. What really does it matter if his lowest level of coaching is significantly higher than SEC basketball?

Fair enough...if you got Marshall or someone of that ilk.
You got a broadcaster, former NBA flameout. Who were you bidding against?

Possible future bidders (like Arizona State). There are still baselines for guys like that who have had success at the highest level. You can't just walk in and say "well you are unemployed and currently don't have any deals in the works so the most we will pay you is $1.5M". If that was the case then why did Mississippi State give Howland $2M? Guy had been unemployed for 2 years. Why didn't they just offer him $1M and say take it or leave it?

Why don't you get it? Are successful high school coaches successful in college? Are successful college coaches successful in the NBA?
It's not a good predictor of success (see current coach at Mizzou).
And on the flip side I could say
- Fred Hoiberg
- Larry Krystkowiak
Krystowiak had a few short stints in college before coming to Utah (assistant for 2 short stints at Montana and ODU and head coach at Montana for 2 years). Hoiberg had none.

Both guys were lifelong professional coaches that came to college and have been home run successes. Krystkowiak hadn't been associated with a college program since he was drafted in 1986,

You are right, he had a few stints at Montana before he took the head coaching job.

Honestly, there isn't much precedent for this. I've spent the last few days searching for some, and the only real example of a true NBA guy with no college experience taking a college head coaching job is Fred Hoiberg. And he wasn't a head coach in the NBA.
Am I missing somebody over the last 10 years or so (other than Reggie Theus, who was even an assistant at L'ville before NMSU)?

Seriously I love yall calling a former NBA coach of the year a flameout. He is the fastest coach in NBA history to win 50 and 100 games.
It is the same group of people too saying crap like this. People who haven't watched a NBA game since Jordan retired, haven't seen Avery Johnson interviewed, or fail to recognize the allure of someone who knows the NBA recruiting prospective players.
Could he flame out? Sure, but some of the reasons people on this board are coming up with are just ridiculous.

Not that I can think of. Most guys either start in the NBA and stay there or start their careers in college and test the NBA waters.

Bama could have hired Red Auerbach's clone and we would have been flamed on here. 50 told me go 'head, switch the style up And if they hate then let 'em hate and watch the money pile up

My favorite thing ever is Auburn posters (ignoring the good ones) that obviously haven't watched a CBB game in a decade suddenly becoming experts because they hired Bruce Pearl.

In release announcing his introductory presser, Alabama coach Avery Johnson says, "Get ready for the ride of your life at Coleman Coliseum!"

My favorite is "I haven't even heard of Avery Johnson"
I mean, if you haven't "heard" of Avery Johnson.............that is a you problem.

Avery Johnson fits a need in the basketball program. He has former NBA experience, he is energetic and well liked and I believe he will do a better job than Grant.
Why should I care who UA was bidding against? I a fan/alum and supporter and I'm very pleased with the hire.

A very underratted but crucial aspect of this hire. To go from a guy like Marshall to Prohm or some other "up and comer" would have killed a lot of buzz being generated this offseason. AJ is a name that can get the fans fired up. That's huge. The AD doesn't necessarily have to sell the hire to the Fanbase

To be clear, I don't think its a bad hire. There's obvious positives to it. I think there's obvious potential for problems as well. And it's obvious that he's overpaid. But it's not my money. Enjoy.
