I was hoping Alabama was going to nab Hubie Brown.

I think it's a fair statement. He's a phenomenal coach who is already plugged in high schools and AAU. And he would have been able to recruit out of the midwest, too. He's an elite coach that will eventually land at a tier 1 basketball school.

Your point is moot because he was never coming to Bama...we put a better financial package on the table and still wasn't enough...so who cares about Marshall. We went out and did the best we could to make an impact hire.

Honestly there really isn't very much precedent. Not a lot of NBA coaches with his sort of up and down NBA resume and no college experience have taken college jobs.

I think it just sets a precedent for how much a HC for Bama basketball can make. Which maybe is a good thing, idk. Only time will tell.

I'm not concerned with anything related to Alabama athletics. Having an opinion on a situation is not the same as being concerned. I personally think that Johnson isn't worth it, but if Bama wants to set that precedent for every bball coach in the future if Johnson doesn't pan out, then by all means, do you Bama.

My response, while directly to your post was intended for the poor rival folks wringing their hands about CAJ's salary.

I'm just pleased that Bama decided to "do Bama" with a sport other than football.

My hope is we aren't trying to figure that out again for a decade or so

I think we should all hope that these hires work out. Obviously somebody has to lose, but we need the league to win. Having 3/4 of the programs cycling through coaches every 3-4 years like we have for the last decade is a disaster.

I was pushing for Mike Fratello. I figured we could have thrown in the most advanced telestrator known to man to seal the deal.

They don't listen to me.

My friend who's a huge Mavs fan thinks he'll make a much better college coach than pro.

I still think it's a nice high risk, high reward hire. I just feel like he's going to make Bama a consistent top 30 program or fail miserably

the hire is definitely growing on me

Yep, agree. Kind of feels like the anti-Rick Barnes hire to me, which could be good or could be bad.

I don't feel like things will get any worse than they were under Grant the last few years, though.

Bama goes out and hires coaches from the pro ranks, pays them less, and the rant babies whine and suck their thumbs. It's great. Roll damn Tide .

Yeah, worst case I see him putting up similar numbers to Grant, which wouldn't be a miserable 4 years. the offense can't get any worse.

The guy I asked basically said he's a very intense guy who's a players coach, but he's curious what he can do without landing top 25 recruits, as the Mavs were stacked under him. Basically he'll be great if he can get some assistants with strong AAU ties. I know he's charismatic and all, but if I'm Pearl, Jones, Anderson, Cal, etc I'm not sweating him breaking the long term relationships they've built because an ex-NBA coach is in town.

did dan merlins get a raise to 4 million+ with a 4 games under .500 sec record?

MSU pays 6.5% for Mullens and in return gets a losing SEC record.

Bama pays 4.5% for Saban and gets three National Titles.

Think I know why Msu AD is poor.

Basically it seems like he has all the raw tools that make a really good recruiter, and he is a decent X's and O's guy, so it seems like something that should be able to fit together to make a pretty good head coach.

But........that doesn't mean it will piece together. It will be interesting. And exciting. Which are two words that didn't fit with our program before.

Ridiculous contract. Just because you HAVE money doesn't mean you have to spend it.

Laughable really

We did overpay. We should have offered him $600k. Ridiculous hire and payment.
