This is absolutely true.
However, when you have to rely on city politicians to buy a large block of your tickets...especially city politicians like those in Birmingham...you run the risk of having your program held hostage. To the tune of almost $1,000,000. And from a business perspective, that isn't good, either.

Out of curiosity, how many tickets did the city purchase? How many have they purchased historically? What happens in the future when the city is broke and can't afford to buy thousands of UAB football tickets?

Seen you comment on this in almost every thread. In your perfect world, what happens to UAB and/or UAB football?
You claimed people aren't that worried about football, but the direction this is heading with decisions being made without representation. Are people afraid the university is heading in a bad direction or what?
TNM claims its all about football. But you present a more coherent and sane argument than he ever has so Id rather hear from you or others.
Hanging up and listening
Honestly. I think this is more about how the University is run. Most Universities involve faculty and community stake holders in major decisions. My wife left UAB this year and is constantly still getting calls about how people who are genuinely concerned are worried about UAB.
Many faculty are greatly concerned about the future of UAB. The President has made troubling comments about the Honors Program and its future. He stopped development of facilities for the business department. He has made changes to benefits for faculty that are not in line with major universities trying to bring in top talent. He himself acknowledges he has not been inclusive to the stakeholders. The problem is, I think the trust lost cannot be regained while he is President.
Even the medical aspect of the University has been declining.
I think, at the end of the day the solution is really simple. The UA BoT has three universities under its' stewardship. Give more representation to UAH and UAB and there would not be so many paranoid theories.

Thing is, the new Tulane stadium can only seat 30,000.
Out of the 80 million for the stadium, 25 million came from one guy, and $7.5m came from the owner of the Pelicans and the Saints. That's $32.5m from two people. At least $20m of the project hadn't been funded by September, 2014.
Meanwhile, UAB had one guy able to say he could raise $5m towards a new stadium. That's chump change.

No, it won't. Not at all. $1.5M from BBVA Compass for a new men's and women's soccer stadium.

See my link above your post. The city bought 5,000 a year, and in the past has threatened to not renew the contract if they didn't get their way on an issue. So yeah, if the city goes broke, or if some politician just gets a bug up his arse, or whatever, UAB loses a big chunk of their season ticket sales which, from a practical standpoint, can't be replaced.

Why should the city subsidize a failing program? How long would they have been willing to continue doing so?
Exactly. I've seen it reported that 5,000 season tickets to the tune of $225k a year are bought by the city of Birmingham. This means that in 2013, almost half of the tickets purchased in each game were bought by the city.

Why are Bama fans so obsessed with UAB?

Cheers Bass!
I find no fault with any of your logic, I just think the program could have been successful.
Again, it is all hypothetical and that is why it is so easy to have differing opinions. I think Jimbo Fisher would have increased attendance. When he left, which would have been within a few years, I think the program could have been seen as a stepping stone. (Nothing wrong with that). I also feel a stadium on campus would have grown support --- provided the product was good.
The problem is this all predicting what would have happened... there is no way to know.
I just feel the issue is much more nuanced than many are willing to admit.

Explain why the so-called supporters didn't actually SUPPORT the program for 20 years?
EVERY frickING TIME PEOPLE TRIED TO SUPPORT IT, THE BAMA BOT STEPPED IN AND PREVENTED IT!
Supporters were willing to pay the fricking COACHES SALARY for a good coach.
Supporters committed to buying luxury boxes for the new stadium.
Supporters committed to season tickets in the new stadium.
Supporters committed to donating to the foundation formed to support the program. Roddie White, Fuller, they pledged millions if they would stop fricking with the program and let it be.
You are being an idiot.
EVERY GODDAMN TIME THE COMMUNITY AND BOOSTERS STEPPED UP TO TRY AND ADVANCE THE PROGRAM OVER THE PAST DECADE WITH COACHES OR FACILITIES, THE UAT BOT PREVENTED IT.
Get you head out of your motherfricking arse. The ONLY reason UAB football was not successful was the UAT BOT working their arse off to prevent it.
Period.

Did the UAT board prevent them from buying tickets and going to games?

frick yeah they did. I tell you that your team has to play in a goddamn ghetto demilitarized zone, that will sure as shite prevent you from buying a ticket and going I suspect.

You know, it's entirely possible that some corporate bigwigs in Birmingham just may have gained more confidence in Watts for cutting football, as evidenced by the $1.5M donation from BBVA Compass for the soccer stadium.
Here's a corporation with deep pockets and a willingness to give to UAB athletics. Did they say, "Hey President Watts...we'll donate to UAB athletics, but we want the money to go to UAB football." No. Did they say, "President Watts, we have a $1,500,000 check for UAB athletics, but if you cut football, you're not getting it"? Hell no. They made a donation to be used towards a men's and women's sport that is financially viable long term and is hugely popular in the city of Birmingham, especially over the mountain, where 4 or 5 of the best HS programs in the state are located. If I'm not mistaken, UAB has the only D-1 men's program in the state, and it's not surprising.

I grew up there, went there, played there (UAB campus and BJCC). I've followed this shite every damn step of the way since the early 90's.
