You're on fire tonight.
I agree though, good defense is the way to win in the SEC. UK can do it, just as well as anyone else in the league.

With who?
I see you guys putting it out there that we should get a defensive coach. And that's fine. But who leads the charge?

Dooley and Pinkel, although it won't be from being fired in Pinkel's case

I think you have to look at guys like Kirby Smart (who will get a better offer), or another defensive coordinator at a good program (Chavis comes to mind), or even a NFL coordinator like Mike Zimmer.
I think if we go with a gimmicky offense, we will end up like the Mumme years and won't win anymore games, albeit they will be entertaining.
As far as the Outback bowl conversion, that was due as much to Tim Couch's heisman hype as the team. As I recall at 7-5 we passed over a couple if 8-4 teams because of Couch, not Mumme.

Dooley stays. Are you saying Pinkel will be hired away by someone?

No, everything I've heard says that he's stepping down/retiring after this season.
ETA: it's nothing official or overly credible, just various sources through the grapevine. I'd give it about a 45 percent chance of being true.

Then my next question is where does the defensive talent come from?

SEC season been that hard on him?
Will they promote from within?

Belle,
In an effort to answer your question about who if a defensive hire, I still go with my list from my post above, but I went through the list of NFL coordinators and on defense I wonder if there would be any interest from Mike Nolan. He has NFL head coaching experience and Atlanta's defense is solid. He does has some college coaching experience, but not as a head man.
I'm a bit leary of hiring a guy who has never coached at the college level, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

UK, just stick to bball. You haven't enough money to fund a football team, without your bball investment falling off.

I'm sure it has, but its primarily due to age/personal life issues. He's been through a lot in the last year.

Pinkel has always been loyal to a fault with his staff (like keeping Yost as OC). Rumor is that he's championing the cause of his coordinators to replace him, but I don't think that's the direction we would go.

Surely he wouldn't think about promoting Yost at this point would he?
Feel free to point them our way if they want to know how that works out at a school like ours.

Even though it hasn't looked like it this year, I think there is some decent young defensive talent. Williamson and Dupree are solid, and if nothing else the freshmen defensive backs can only get better.
Obviously without saying recruiting is the key. We have to start competing with something other than MAC teams for talent. I know we won't win recruiting battles with Bama and LSU, but I think as Cheese Grits pointed out, we need to steal some recruits from up north, as well as areas like Mississippi and Texas.
A named coach, whether he be a current coordinator or HC somewhere can recruit to UK I think.
The biggest hurdle is that there is no talent instate, or at least not much.
Look at Charlie Strong. He has ties to Florida and has brought some talent to Louisville, which should be a harder recruiting school than UK. I think it can be done, but a solid hire is necessary.

If you're seriously claiming that Dooley will still be the head coach at Tennessee next year, you're either:
a) lying
b) uninformed
c) stupid

And here comes the condescending comments again when I don't agree.
What you view as condescending I view as knowing the history and how the world really works. It is not a popularity contest here in that I agree or disagree but the issue of stepping back and seeing what is best for the long term future of UK football. You internalize my comments as attacks on you which is not the intent. My comments are to say, been there, done that, and it did not work as well as folks think it did. What I am trying to do is lay the groundwork for discussion that actually results in better long term results.

Thank you for the history lesson but that doesn't really address my point.
Then when fans like you continue to follow the crowds and do things in the short term you will continue to complain when you do not get different results. Mumme and Leach put UK on probation with less tangible results than Brooks who did it the slow and steady way. Look at the history :
Hal Mumme + Guy Morris at UK in "Air Raid" era = 6 years
1997 Kentucky 5–6 = 5th (East)
1998 Kentucky 7–5 = 4th (East) Lost in bowl game
1999 Kentucky 6–6 = 4th (East) Lost in bowl game
2000 Kentucky 2–9 = 6th (East)
2001 Kentucky 2–9 = 5th (East)
2002 Kentucky 7–5 = T–4th (East)
Rich "paw paw" Brooks and the "maters" era = 7 years
2003 Kentucky 4–8 = T–5th (East)
2004 Kentucky 2–9 = T–5th (East)
2005 Kentucky 3–8 = 6th (East)
2006 Kentucky 8–5 = T–3rd (East) Won bowl game
2007 Kentucky 8–5 = T–4th (East) Won bowl game
2008 Kentucky 7–6 = 6th (East) Won bowl game
2009 Kentucky 7–6 = T–4th (East) Lost in bowl game
A part of the debate is the wins but part is how you condition your fans to trade up from coach to coach. It is also to create an edge that exploits limited recruiting. Playing UL, WKU, EKU, and Murray State does not expand the UK brand nor does it help when an instate rival uses the win to recruit against you like Louisville does. Since World War II the Ohio State Buckeyes have played the Cincinnati Bearcats (4) times and this lack of scheduling has not hurt Ohio State recruiting.
UK did not play UL for a reason once they both were no longer members of the Southern Conference. Between 1924 and 1994 (70 years) they did not play. Since then they have played 18 times and UK has lost 10 of them. Every time UK loses they slip in recruiting in the state. Yet you keep shouting about coaching changes while ignoring a whole host of greater issues.
Step back and look at the big picture so your passion is more effectively focused on creating real long term solutions.

I have said in other threads that Tennessee will finish 7-5 this year with a 4 game winning streak. He took over a dumpster fire from Kiffin, and they are showing progress.
I know it's not as fast a turn around as you wanted (or any fanbase wants), but they are improving whether you like it or not.
They can fire him if they want, but if they are going to do it, better do it now and not give him the chance to finish the season 4-0 and then fire him. PR nightmare, and will cause any decent coach to avoid that. That's all I'm saying.
Posted on 11/4/12 at 5:39 pm to kywildcatfanone
Please. If Tennessee keeps Dooley much longer, we'll become Colorado. And what is this "progress" that you're referring to?
And regardless of what you want to see happen, Dooley is finished.

How old is Kirby Smart, and how long has he been a DC at Bama?
