You are making a comparison with stats without taking into account NFL talent, strength of schedule differences, coaching changes generally, etc. If you're really trying to dissect a sound point, you aren't using enough info.

Lol, the guy I was responding to said 2015 LSU was statistically better than 2014 LSU, which isn't the case. We could spend all off season debating which was truly better.

Lol how was that sarcasm??

Nevermind, that was a rhetorical question. B.B is a grown man and is capable of defending himself. Please shut the frick up, Spark.

I'm curious what the melters thought was going to happen?

We have not fielded a defense in 5 years that has allowed less than 400 yards per game and less than 28 points per SEC game. Not many coaches are going to hitch their wagon to that and there isn't a coach in the world that can fix that overnight. We got an average hire for a below average defense. You guys actually think Gus waited to make a hire? Come on. I think it took so long because Gus was told no thanks by multiple people. All we can do is hope against hope the defense improves. At least, for once, we will have a DC stick around for a few years (assuming Gus stays).

Honestly I'm not sure what would have been better. I said yesterday this strikes me as Ellis Johnson, but with a better resume and history of connecting with good defensive programs and coaches.

It was either that, or go with the wildcard first time coordinator or fairly new coordinator (Allen).

FWIW, I don't think we got turned down that much. My expectation is that we went hard for Kelly, missed, flirted with Shoop but didn't get much interest, and in the process of feeling out whether to hire Allen or promote LT or something similar, we got wind Steele may not mind a move.

I totally believe a lot of coaches expressed no interest in the job. I don't think anyone other than Kelly was offered and rejected the job

I hope my initial reaction was wrong, and this ends up being a good hire. As of now, I doubt it tho. This reminded me of my initial reaction to the Chizik hire, and we all know how that turned out. Personally, I would have rather had CLT, especially after the way the D reacted and performed yesterday.

With a national championship?

I'd rather have Steele as a DC but I would choose LT for $800k over Steele for $1.3mil. We need to stop over paying for assistants

With a dumpster fire of a program, with which we're still feeling some of the effects from.
At this point, it's irrelevant. I just want us to field a Defense again. I miss our D from the Tubbs days!

If you want good coaches you need to pay. It's not like we can't afford it.

Our problem is we pay for not decent coaches, and then pay for them to not coach us anymore.

I keep reading this a lot. What if we had given up 450 yards and 35 points. Would that have changed your mind? I don't want to give the job to a lifelong assistant after one game in which he had a month to prepare.

I don't really know what I want or think should happen. I just know we weren't in a good negotiating position and this isn't a completely atrocious outcome. I do wish we would quit spending so much money, but that is the nature of the game now.

Right. Hire good coaches and pay them $. Not average coaches and pay like they're top shelf.

A lot of teams have great coaching staffs for a fraction of the price who have better production and on par recruiting

#2 Highest paid Assistant Coaching Staff

According to CoachingSearch

OC - #10 - Rhett Lashlee
RB - #9 - Tim Horton
WR - #1 - Dameyune Craig
TE - #6 - Scott Fountain
OL - #14 - JB Grimes

DC - #1 - Will Muschamp
DL - #2 - Rodney Garner
LB - ? - Lance Thompson (likely top 4-5)
DB - #1 - TRob

The only coaches on the list who seems somewhat reasonably ranked are Horton & JB Grimes. Our OL & RB are the two areas that are consistently solid with players being coached up as the year goes on.

I think Horton has done a great job with the RBs and is definitely worth what he is paid.

Complete oversight. You make good points and I edited it to include Horton in addition to Grimes

Horton, Fountain, and Grimes have all done solid jobs... SF also coordinates special teams, who have been very good. Craig is an elite recruiter who is somehow managing to talk highly ranked WRs into coming here... he's worth it.

Really, outside of lashlee, the other offensive assistants I have no problem with their salaries.
