re: It's painfully obvious that AU football is trending toward the bottom of the SEC

Shhhh. If you say it, it won't happen. He was just joking. Haha.

I mean the talent is here, it's evident AU can recruit among the best, so at worst, AU starts over with a new staff after next year. It's nothing to lose your shite over. AU football recovers quickly regardless, no reason for all hope to be lost.

Why do you guys focus so much on the compensation?
You emphasize it as if you'd be content so long they're working for free. I doubt you feel that way.
Cry all day about performance on the field but you guys just saturate your analysis with meaningless salary figures

What else is laughable, most of the hires that have left were the fan favorites, hot commodities so to speak. It was common sense that they would be courted by other schools. Almost all of them except DC left for promotions, and DC left for more upward mobility. So what does everyone do? Assume the program is crumbling to the ground, automatically predicting the worst case scenario and that Malzahn ran everyone off. Then, for replacements, Malzahn hires guys that will probably offer more stability and will stick around to build a program around, then everyone complains about that. It's such a little bro mindset. I've concluded what Bama fans say about most AU fans is true.

I don't get the money argument either. Someone even made a thread about trying to save money on a new coach yesterday

At least I'm honest about our situation... No sunshine pumping

Well, we were last in the SECw last year. The coaching turnover suggests we are not very stable at the moment as well. To say that we are trending anywhere but up since our NC year is actually a pretty safe statement. As far as we know, until something changes, our status quo is still 7-6. Something has to push our trajectory up and we don't know yet if it's the new coaching staff that will do so.
It's funny how some of the "I don't get upset about football" crowd were the ones that attacked the OP.

Who said they didn't care about football?
Also, you have a very low threshold for what you consider an attack, but than you are always thinking you're being attacked. Someone pointed out he makes similar threads over and over, and they are becoming boring. That's a fac not an attack.
I'm betting you are feeling attacked now.

I have a big issue with salaries we hand out, I just don't see why that is being brought up in the on field performance discussion
For example, if Kevin Steele got our defense to #30 consistently, I would be happy with his performance but still confused as to how he got his fat contract.

Because he was taking a risk to coach defense for a school that has had 10 DCs in 10 years
It's not that tough to figure out

Your simpleton herp derp attacks are beneath me so I guess that destroys your whole argument about my low threshold. Dumbass

for the record, I should have and meant to write "attack the OP's argument", not the OP. I thought OP stood for original post.

That's the point jones was making. The op wasn't an original post at all.

I'm not going to lie, I don't know who Luke is and I don't recall his recent posts, so just don't focus on the last part. I was talking about the posts like KK's( not Jonses) where you can see where he is clearly scoffing at the idea that our program is trending down. We are 2-9 in the SEC since Ole Miss 2014. Cannot get much more down than that. Maybe the hires bring us up but it hasn't yet.

I meant that if we were going to pay $1.3mil/year, we should have been able to get someone better than Steele. He is like the Carly Fiorina of DCs, never successful yet somehow is a top 5 paid DC

Gotcha, but in my opinion I don't see that as an attack. Just a poster who doesn't agree with the OP.
That's just my opinion is all. Anyway I myself feel it definitely is a few steps backward from where we all expected to go. All the talent on board I expect more wins. Gus has his guys and I am ready to watch the upcoming season unfold.

Nobody wants to touch Auburn's DC position right now. The kind of guys that are willing to coach here want a big contract for taking a risk
A contract isn't only about the coach's product on the field. It's compensation
Just a heads up for the fan melt - we will run into this when (if) we fire Gus this season. His replacement is going to expect a fat check to compensate for the instability that is Auburn football right now.

If you keep looking for the "established" DC candidates you're right.
I view it like the NFL head coaching hiring process. All these teams keep hiring "failed" or "average" coaches because of their past experiences? At what point do you say, "screw it I'm going to roll the dice on talent rather than a known avg quantity"

2009 and 2011 teams were both meaningfully better than 2015 team
2009 had 8 wins (vs 7 in 2015); played Bama close for entire game and played in a real bowl out of state
2011 team beat #10 team in the country and finished 4 - 4 in SEC (2015 team was dead last in SEC West with 2 - 6 record)
