Looks to be a good year to hire a new coach. We can compete with UT, Arky, and Mizzou (I think Sumlin stays). Nationally, notre dame, UNC, and UCLA will have openings. LSU probably had Herman had Texas not opened up. I don't know Veneables personality but his record is a lot of success.

I think Venables is the best option unless we throw the entire bank at Kelly. Maybe that will be an option once the JJ debacle is officially over.

I honestly am not sure if Chip Kelly would be a success here as he started having many of the same problems in the NFL as Gus is having right now (getting beat by his own tendencies)
But it would be an epic preseason build up

Well, he's essentially the only coach out there with a good enough resume to instantly be a threat to the top tier of CFB.

Realistic options are:
Gene Chizik
Kodi Burns
Rhett Lashlee
Kevin Steele

Oh I know, I just am not sure if he's the HR hire or not. I worry he suffers from same weaknesses as Gus in that he doesn't adjust to his own tendencies.
I definitely wouldn't hate the hire tho. Would be a splash for sure and the troll threads would be amazing

Kelly has the resume but he's a bizarre and socially awkward dude and I certainly question how he'd major CFB and recruiting in the southeast.
Sort of like Leach if Leach had no sense of humor at all

I am 100% fine with us hiring a coordinator if we do it correctly. It may be Venables or someone we've never heard of.
The trait that seems to epitomize the best coach in the country is that there is absolutely zero room for bullshite. There is no 'eh, I'll let that slide this time'
He is never, under any circumstances ok with not doing things the best way.
Its always a yes or a no. There is no grey area. Its discipline in everything. I care nothing about what name we get. I want someone who is incredibly and genuinely disciplined, coordinator or not.

Not a bad list, but missing one name that may have some interest from both sides.
Clay Helton... USC Head Coach
After redshirting his freshman year, Helton played college football at Auburn as quarterback. In 1993, Helton transferred to Houston, after his father was hired as head coach there.[1] Helton was a backup quarterback at both Auburn and Houston and graduated from Houston in 1994 with a degree in mathematics and interdisciplinary science.[1][3] At Houston, Helton completed 47 of 87 passes for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions and played 16 games.[4]

This. It made me laugh. If JJ is still around to make the next hire Rhett Lashlee will be on the short list. He is just that dumb.

To counter UT hiring Peyton.

Surprised Butch Davis' name hasn't come up.
Established HC with multiple championships.
Track record of developing elite NFL LEVEL players
Could be bought for next to nothing.
Not a lot of competition for his services
IMO only out of a job for so long because of the UNC academic scandal which was recently declared null and void by the NCAA.

Kelly has told multiple people that he hates to recruit. If we want to stay competitive, that won't work because Kirby and Nick will be all over us. A big NO to Chip Kelly.

I will say this..Whoever has the chance to hire Jeff Brohm and doesn’t do it is making a big mistake. What he is doing at Purdue is remarkable. He almost beat Wisconsin Saturday. They almost beat Louisville and he beat PJ Fleck and Minnesota decisively. That Purdue team was godawful before he got there. Someone will hire him away in 2-3 years and they are going to get a star.

Pump the brakes on Brohm. He is 3-3 at Purdue, same record that Darrell Hazell had there last year at this time. They fired him midway through year 4.
Brohm's success at WKU followed Taggart and Petrino. I think we should let somebody else roll the dice on him.
I would rather have the real Petrino, instead of Petrino Lite...

Wait and see. I think that you will have a different opinion in 2-3 years. He is Petrino without the baggage. Arkansas will probably hire him if they can ever afford to get rid of the fatass. Hazell was 9-33 at Purdue. 3-24 conference record. Terrible program.
