If you want a completely open zoning market, the only people that can and will buy places in AU are massive corporate chains. No one wants Auburn to be Lubbock.
You know why people almost universally think Athens and Tuscaloosa are cooler than Auburn? Because they actually value this cool little thing called 'city culture', you walnut.

Bingo.

Unfortunately, it appears that developers' interests in Auburn aren't to give Auburn more personality as a city, but instead to put money in their own pockets. If that's the case, then I have no problem with the government intervening as long as it's rational.
Do you know what's replacing Barbecue House on that corner yet?
No?
If not, how can you bemoan what has yet to happen?
I wish the Sani Flush, Channelo's, Hill's Barbershop, and Rusty's Oyster Bar still existed. I would love for Auburn to have stayed EXACTLY like it was when I was a student. That would have prevented a lot of fun for students who came after me though in places that were "new".
Times change. You move on.

I wish upon you one day losing thousands and thousands of dollars for something you invested in long ago because of other people's ideas of "city culture" that are utterly different from your own.
That would be cool.

I work in architecture/planning in NYC, which is going through the same culture struggles as land value continues to increase in the outer burroughs. I'm watching entire blocks of mom and pop stores turn into Duane Reade's and Starbucks because they are the only ones that can afford to build.
If you think nothing is being lost by putting little restriction on zoning then you're fooling yourself Ayn Rand. I don't want everything to stay the same at Auburn from when I was a student, I would rather it evolve and change as the university grows and the town gets richer. At the same time, I think it's a shame to lose focus on creating and maintaining a robust, place-based downtown culture that people take pride in. But you go ahead and enjoy your friendly neighborhood Walmart and Olive Garden in Anytown, USA.

Did you not read the latter half of my comment?
All you have to do is look at the hum-drum complex next door to get a sense of what is most likely going to be built there.
I embrace change. I'm often excited to see change. But based on the recent history of what's been happening around Auburn, it's difficult to convince myself to be excited about this news.

The complex next door is fine. There just has to be balance. A complex like that was definitely needed. However, there can still be room for Auburn institutions to be preserved.

But I also despise the majority of developers because they aren't motivated by the right reasons.
Making money and providing for their families? Yeah, frick those guys.
Price's was by far the worst BBQ in Auburn anyways. And most of the BBQ in Auburn was decent at best.

Where exactly was this? I don't remember ever going there......

It's not a complete failure, but it certainly didn't take advantage of the full potential of that site.

You've probably seen or walked pass it 1,000 times.

It's literally on one of the busiest corners in Auburn, College and Samford.

Your point is invalid. I am not saying that I agree with the direction that Auburn is taking in regards to the downtown area but to throw this on the developer is childish.

Is Price's really that good? I've never had it, but I've driven past it 100 times.

No, it is just ok. Go to Chuck's in Opelika.

I'll go to Mike n Ed's for more stuff, but Price's breakfast and pulled pork was pretty damn good. Their brunswick stew was also fantastic.

Good not great. Hate to see it go tho.
