eh I would argue he was terrible at every position outside of the defensive line

True, I forgot D-Line, for which he was pretty decent at eyeing talent. And you're right, he actually blew at QB evaluation.

I keep remembering that this is the same coach who signed B. Allen, Jacory Walker, Jim Youngblood, and Brandon Mitchell, the last three of whom aren't on our roster and never saw meaningful action.

And don't get me started on Vin Ascolese, dear God Vin Ascolese...

To Vinny's credit, Gary Patterson sees something in him, too.

Petrino was regarded as a to evaluator because he had a couple classes at Louisville retroactively ranked very highly. It didn't work out like that here.

Truth. I'd kill to know how poorly his classes would be re-ranked at Arkansas.

That's still a shewed piece of data though. Here's the thing with Petrino. He is one of the top offensive minds in football at any level. It's not that he created some amazing offensive system it's his in game play calling that sets him apart from everybody else. It's like Mike Tyson said, everybody has a plan until they get hit in the mouth. Both staffs come into a game with a plan and after the game gets going they have to make adjustments based on what is actually happening. That's where the separation between play callers occurs and that's where Petrino is almost in a league of his own. I typed all that shite you already know to say that all petrino needs is some bodies with some measure of athleticism and he'll play call around their deficiencies. Thats why his players look so much better when he is the coach as opposed to when he leaves or when they move on to the NFL. Some talents are going to shine no matter who they are coached by, but Brohm and Wilson are great examples of players looking a lot better because of Petrino. His classes are reranked high based on their production, and a significant portion of their production can be credited to Petrinos playcalling rather than natural skill. I don't want to make it seem like I'm bashing any former productive players because I appreciate the players that represented our university with class and busted their arse for the team.

so is there real reason to be positive about our passing game? i know earlier it was said that WR's messed up Allen, both in his productivity and his confidence. i'm wondering if a d. wilson returning from injury and a few freshmen will be enough to get him where needs to be.

agree completely

wasn't there a stat last year that like 90% of all the offensive production came from freshmen?

No way in hell it was that high. Not with Herndon and Hatcher being our leading receivers and JWill having 900 yards.

From 247:

Randy Shannon says it feels good to have some experienced LBers and they are looking good. Josh Williams and the three freshmen are working at both ILB and OLB. TQ is still working at LB. Otha has done a good job with his body.Coach Herb did great job with him

Robb Smith said the DB who has stood out is Joshua Liddell at safety. Said he flashed today with the varsity. This is kid I kept saying UA should offer and loved. I think they are now very glad they offered him.

Randy told me Josh Williams is looking very good at all three spots. Said he made a couple of big plays today.

Coach Smith praised Braylon for being a leader with the younger players. Braylon said he is doing that because when he came in he didn't know what he was doing and the older players took him under their wing and worked with him

Alan Turner said Joshua Liddell has really looked good. Still making some freshmen mistakes but playing well.

Coach Segrest said Bijhon has really looked good. He has shown some very good quickness as well. Something they saw on film during the recruiting process

I asked Coach Segrest about Armon, Taiwan, Cordale and the guys who don't play that much. He said when they scrimmage and get their chance they need to take advantage of the moment.

Really had good things to say aobut Deatrich Wise and Tevin Beanum too. Beanum he said is just so smart.

Trey Flowers told me that Coach Smith has really impressed him with his philosophy fun D to play. in. He also said Bijhon and Armon have looked very good

Deatrich told me he has really been impressed with the linebackers and secondary. He said he knows what they do effects him and what the DL does effects them. Very impressed with the defense in general.

Darius said he has come in knowing he has a larger role this year than in past. He said he has worked hard with Coach Segrest to make sure he tries to do what he is telling him to do. He said that while Bijhon and Armon are looking good, and many think they are ready to play as true freshmen, the SEC is a big step up and they still have a lot of work to do.

Brandon Lewis said it meant a lot to him that Trey Flowers came back. Trey is still here to lead them and be the leader of the unit.

JaMichael said the DL has come a long ways and continues to grow.

From Dalton Person at 247:

- With today being the first day with any type of pads on, there was a real push on the physicality front by the coaches. Multiple players and coaches talked about an inside drill, assuredly the first of the year. Notably, one of the players who stood out during that period was Josh Williams, who had several big hits. Looking forward to seeing how he does on Saturday.

- Coach Shannon said that Otha Peters, Brooks Ellis, Martrell Spaight, and TQ Coleman are doing a good job with growing as players. They understand the game better and understand their mistakes. Braylon is a player he specifically noted as being a leader and helping the other younger players out.

- One thing I found interesting is that Coach Shannon said he didn't look at Josh Williams' forty time, and rarely does. He focuses mainly on film.

- At middle linebacker, Brooks Ellis is starting with Josh Williams and Otha Peters behind him. At Sam is Braylon, Daunte Carr, and Ramsey in that order. At Will, starting is Spaight with TQ and Eugene, according to Shannon.

- Coach Jennings said the players can "Get off the porch and go eat, or stay on the porch and watch the cars go by." He's really promoting the competition in the group. Jennings pointed out Tevin Mitchell, Carroll Washington, and Jared Collins as players standing out.

- Cornelius Floyd and Henre Toliver are very young and sometimes look like a deer in the headlights, but he's confident that they'll continue to improve. Floyd had some good reps today and Toliver had an interception. Alan Turner and Kevin Richardson both had big plays/picks. Josh Liddell is showing some good flashes. Coley needs to become more consistent.

- Trey Flowers obviously has potential for the next level, and back in the spring he and Coach Segrest talked about some areas where he can improve. One in particular is his overall pass rush. He's got a good speed to power move, but he needs to continue to develop his arsenal.

- Bijhon Jackson looked "a little soft" when he first arrived, but he's gotten in a lot better shape and has some more strength, Segrest said.

- Starting on the DL right now is Trey Flowers, Darius Philon, Demarcus Hodge, and Deatrich Wise.

- Hodge knew he needed to lose some weight and had to be depended upon this year, so he's lost some of that. He's always had great strength and improved on that this summer.

- The defense is really just sticking to the basics right now and focusing on fundamentals. They're really focused on their base packages and want to better that before they move on to more complex calls.

- Carroll Washington echoed Coach Jennings' sentiments and said their approach at DBs right now is "Jump on the train or get ran over." He's starting on the boundary with DJ Dean working behind him.

- Trey Flowers realizes that he's one of the guys in the SEC likely to get double teamed quite a bit by offensive lines, but said that'll just give another player an opportunity to make a play.

- Braylon Mitchell said Josh Williams is playing very physical and that he knocked a few fullbacks back in inside today. All the young guys are eager to learn and just working on understanding the defense. He said he's noticed a huge difference in Martrell and Brooks after a year, and that they're all starting to understand how Coach Shannon wants them to play.

- Deatrich Wise said he's trying to be a role model for the younger guys. He said that Trey Flowers has always been a quiet guy, but when he talks everyone listens. He's more of a quiet leader. He spent his summer working on fundamentals and better understanding this system. He's weighing 275 right now, up 5-8 pounds from last year.
