Not going to hijack the thread, but that's dumb to say.

I'm ignorant on Bama laws:

If he had a permit, is he allowed to carry there on campus? Seems like it was school police who got him or that's at least what that article says

I thought even with a permit you can't carry at a lot of schools

There isn't enough information out to know. It would depend on where he was when he had it. For example, if it was in his car he would be perfectly legal with a permit.

That could well be the case here. He's from Louisiana where you don't need a permit to have one in your vehicle. In fact, Alabama and IIRC Arkansas are the only states in the SEC footprint that require a permit to carry a handgun in your vehicle.

The only reason it is still prohibited in Alabama is because the county sheriffs don't want to lose most of their $20 a year permit fees.

I'd say the same thing. Why is he carrying a gun?

Not only that, but without a permit as well?

This has nothing go do with his race, background, etc.

I agree that it's not a race issue and it's incredibly stupid for him to not have a carry permit, but it's completely understandable for someone to carry a gun. Sure most won't need it 999/1000 times, but there is a chance it could save their life or someone else's one day. If people want that insurance, why do you care?

I'm waiting for this to get twisted into racial profiling. There are a lot of unanswered questions with this. I'm sure they will release a statement later.

The way it was when I was in school, you couldn't keep a firearm in the dorms. It had to be registered with campus police and, if I remember correctly, had to be kept with them. If you wanted to use it you would go to them and sign it out.

Just dumb all around. Dumb drug laws, a plant smell warranting search and seizure, dumb gun laws, but also doing illegal shite when you're less than a year from a huge paycheck.

Ok, makes sense.

Dumb move on Williams' part but from a legal system it is the case is going to probably dismissed. Heck, he could plead guilty and the fine won't be much if any more than his bond.

Assuming it was his car and his gun, it is very possible that he didn't know he needed a permit to have it in the car in Alabama.

As (appropriately) Cheech and Chong said, Bailiff, whack his pee pee and let's get back to football.

Who the hell goes to Publix to get stoned? Especially that one, since the University is the property owner.

Also, I'd like to hang out with Brandon Chicken some day. He sounds like a fun guy.

That's the dumb part. Frick the gun, that's what he should have been arrested over.

You're sitting in the parking lot of a Publix that has been closed for 3 hours and the idea that an officer might find that curious never occurred to you?

C'mon Tim.

The chance of that happening is so negligible, that he's more likely to get in trouble for having the gun than for him to use it to protect himself or someone else.

I don't know where he lives, but at some point, they decided it was best to leave their apartment and go get stoned at a closed grocery store ON CAMPUS.

I'm just going to go ahead and guess they were already wasted when they decided that was a good idea.

That's probably the reason behind almost every incident.

You might want to look at the CDC study about defensive gun use before making that statement.

I hope so. I'd rather think he was wasted as opposed to just really, really stupid.

Then tell me what the odds are that he'll have to use a gun to protect himself within 2 miles of the UA campus to protect himself or someone else, vs the odds that having a gun without a permit will get him in trouble. And getting arrested for not having the permit isn't the only way to get in trouble.

Not following the law in a state were doing so is very easy is dumb. Not going to defend that at all.

As to the other one, those defensive gun uses are overwhelmingly at home or while in your vehicle. Just like those jumper cables or fire extinguisher, you rarely if ever need them but when you do you really, really need them.

I used to walk to that Publix after getting stoned. Used to get lost in those aisles.
