But does he have to carry one around without a permit?

Considering you can open carry one without a permit, why does it matter?

Based on what exactly?

Just like those jumper cables or fire extinguisher, you rarely if ever need them but when you do you really, really need them.

It would be damn hard for someone to steal those jumper cables and fire extinguisher and use it against me.

So the Rant is going to love this.

Tim Williams has produced a receipt for the gun and a permit. He just didn't have it on him at the time of the incident.

Court documents now show he had a receipt for the gun and a permit but he did not have the permit in his possession.

Two points.

1) What does that have to do with its usefulness to you?

2) An evildoer using a victims own gun against them is an incredibly rare happening. You're more likely to get bit by your own guard dog.

If that's accurate, fantastic. I'm glad he was carrying legally.

Now just STAY OUT OF PUBLIX AT 2AM!

Why was he out at 2 am with a gun?

Why would he ever be out without his gun?

Apparently his gun was just under the seat.

Maybe so, but it's just one of many ways to get in trouble while having it. Since he was possibly high and drunk, he could have been like that NFL player that shot himself in the club.

Good luck proving that.

He wasn't charged with public intoxication or any other alcohol related offense, so that's probably off the table but I completely agree that carrying a firearm while using any mind altering substance is unwise.

He wasn't in a club and the gun was under his seat, so no not really.

The chance of that happening is so negligible, that he's more likely to get in trouble for having the gun than for him to use it to protect himself or someone else.

You can't get in trouble for lawfully having a gun on your person. I have 3 known friends/relatives that have drawn/used their carry firearm in the past 2 years which has arguably saved their lives and at the very least their possessions. Is it likely to happen? No, not in most situations. But there is nothing wrong with carrying a gun to protect yourself.
