Disagree on Larry Brown just because I don't think he is going to be coaching much longer

Looking at Grant, and all around the country, it seems that keeping the ball rolling at a good mid major for a couple of seasons can be done by many "slightly above average" coaches and tells you little about how well they're going to be able to recruit at a program like Alabama.
Very good point. That's why you can't go with the coach who gets hot in the tournament or win a conference tourney or two. 1 or 2 players can carry a coach. Just like in football, you have to look at a coach who has had sustained success over several years.

A few thoughts. ...
1. I don't think Coleman coliseum is a deterrent. A coach would have to be pretty shallow to be turned off from a 15,000 seat facility.
It's not like there are many perfect arenas around in college. Now the student seating should be moved.
2. Does anyone think that Saban would try to use any influence on trying to get a coach, or take zero role? I sort of think he will take no role, unless he's interested in some type of AD position.
3. There are a number of qualified coaches mentioned in this thread, any of which may be the right fit.
Bama needs someone who can keep these young players fired up for a season. Grant's calm, passive personality just didn't allow for that.

Cecil said on twitter he doesn't expect Battle to reciprocate the interest in Howland. Maybe that'll change.

I am seriously dreading who we hire. Just gonna hope to be pleasently surprised.

What would y'all think about bobby Hurley? I know he isn't a big name as kinda inexperienced but I just like the guy.

I'm with you. This isn't like when we fired Gottfried midseason and had a few months head start. As of just a few days ago, Battle wasn't planning on searching. We are starting from scratch.
My hope is Battle put some feelers out there the last two days and got some positive responses, which led to him to finally pulling the trigger.

I actually like him. He gave a better game to Kentucky to almost anyone this season. I just don't want us to go with the up and comer out of the mid-majors again unless it is a guy like Archie Miller or Greg Marshall.

My big worry is that we really have a makeshift administration right now between a interim president and an AD that likely isn't going to be around much longer. I'm afraid of it pushing some guys away.
One thing that worried me reading BOL's thoughts on Grant:
quote:
"We're doing it the right way." I really think the mandate handed down from the administration at the time of Grant's hiring was to conduct business totally above board. When I say that, I mean without so much as threatening the "gray" areas in recruiting that a lot of successful programs live within.
You just can't avoid the gray areas of recruiting when it comes to CBB and be successful. I worry Battle wants someone that will avoid the shadiness that goes on with CBB recruiting. It was why if fired AG last year Pearl would have never been an actual candidate.
The issues are compounded when you realize that are direct competition in the state LIVES in the grey area.

I like this thought and believe it has to have some merit.

He may end up being a great coach and I wouldn't hate the hire as it sounds better than many names being mentioned.
However, my main hesitation though would be how closely he fits Grant's profile (working under great coach, taking over a program and having success but just for a couple of years).
Ironically, he took over at SUNY-Buffalo for our current assistant Reggie Witherspoon, who also had a run of 20 win seasons there and just missed the dance by being upset in the conference tourney finals at least a couple of times.

we will make a move for a splash hire.... we may not get him, but we have the money to make a serious offer and we will at least have their attention
Posted on 3/15/15 at 11:12 pm to mattloc
We need to make a splash hire IMO. Anything that doesn't generate new founded excitement in the program is a poor job.

Great point but agreed that it's kind of a worrysome one as well.
I still think Grant is easily a good enough coach to win at a much better clip (as he did when he had more talent at VCU) but simply always had holes in the roster or, better, missed that one highly coveted difference maker every season.
I also imagine, without real evidence, that Grant was likely as clean as you get in recruiting and that may well be why.

The new coach is going to inherit a decent roster. Should be a good nucleus of guys there to build off of.
Taylor
Hale/Kessens
Norris
Tarrant
Obosohan/Coleman
Mitchell?
the cupboard isnt completely bare, so long as none of these guys transfer.

Tom Izzo makes 1.735M a year at Michigan State. Maybe Coach Saban can provide him with some influence to make the move South.

Make someone the highest paid coach in basketball. We have the funds. Time to buck the trend and do it. Start with Phil Jackson, make him say no. Pat Reilly next. Go down the list until someone can't pass up the money. You start at the top though. Roll Tide yall

not sure if serious, but if that's the road you want to go down, Larry Brown is your man.

I'm tongue in cheek serious. It doesn't hurt to put feelers out to the big names. Battle needs to approach the hire with that mentality. A guy like Tom Izzo needs to be at the top of the list, not Rick Stansbury. Make great coaches tell you no before offering a the job to a risky candidate
