The Alabama fan base has an unhealthy obsession with the backup QB.

This is every fanbase ever.

I would extend it to the QB position in general, everyone is ridiculously gay about the QB, be it the backup or the starter. People defend Hurts on here like he's their boyfriend. People push the backup like he's their BFF.

That's not just a Bama issue or a Hurts issue, it's every QB of every team ever. People get overly emotional to the QB position no matter who the QB is or what the situation is.

I agree, but it goes both ways...other people also attack him like he's their ex-husband...

Yep, the backup QB at Bama has usually been one of the most popular players among fans since the Bear called it quits...

The Tua-Jalen battle will be the most controversial QB discussions since Zow-Watts.

I hope Tua or Jones is the next Joe Montana, but hyping a kid up like this usually leads to disappointment. I just think that we should realize that the chances of either one coming in as a true freshman and taking the job from Hurts are very low.

Hurts was a special freshman and what he was able to do was very rare. The chances of Tua or Jones coming in and doing the same are very low IMO. That's nothing against Tua or Jones, I just don't want people start counting out and getting down on them when they don't sniff the starting job(barring injury) because the expectations were ridiculous.

Some of the people pushing Tua/Jones are assuming Hurts' performance level is static. He's going to (or should) improve a ton from his first to second year.

I think people are massively underselling Jalen Hurts because we lost against Clemson. The kid has 'winner' and 'Heisman' written all over him IF he improves his passing.

He will have to call Igon, Ray, Peter and Winston to get rid of all those ghosts he was running from the latter half of the season.

Maybe so - but no point in spending the entire offseason talking about how trash a true freshman QB who won the SEC Championship and worked his arse off is.

If he doesn't improve and gets beat out, so be it. I'm not usually into caring what people think and their feelings, but can you imagine coming in as a true freshman, having the season Jalen did (and the season the team did) and spending the entire offseason reading how shitty you are and how some other freshman who has never taken a college snap is clearly better than you? Just seems kind of stupid.

AMEN BROTHER! Give the kid a break. If he can get the job done...great. If he can't, we're fortunate to have 2 other guys waiting their turn. Until then, let's not run the guy down...he's OUR guy.

This is why team boards are intolerable due to sunshine pumpers. If you criticize a player's performance then you don't have their back? GTFO with that shite. I like Hurts but he's a awful passer. If he doesn't get better then he'll be benched. I think he will work on his skillset and hopefully should improve. If not then next man up.

Isn't this the same message without all the negative connotations?

So it is sunshine pumping, because I stated the obvious about the team being behind him and our fan base being unhappy with a true freshman who helped lead us to the big game? If Jalen isn't up for the job and doesn't improve, I hope Saban replaces him.

All I am saying is that the kid didn't have the luxury of redshirting. It was obvious that he didn't trust his "eyes", when reading coverages and wanted to limit his mistakes via the air. I don't mind the convo, but it is silly to think Jones or Tua wouldn't have the same problem. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Oh please...frick that noise....we left a title on the table. If we had anything resembling a downfield passing game we win the Clemson game handily.

Okay? What's your point? What would you have done different last year if you were Saban?

My point is we haven't had any consistency at the position since AJ despite recruiting numerous 5*/4*. Why is that? Coker was serviceable enough and in fact I wish we had him for another year. Coker > Hurts or hell maybe we should just have converted Ar'Darius back to QB. Yet we somehow wind up with a true freshman who is basically a running back and chucks it around like its backyard ball.

Look at what Brady did last night. He is the zen master of the intermediate passing game. However, that element of the game was completely missing from Bama's offense last season. None. Whatsoever...and the deep ball? LOfrickingL....but, hey lets just keep our fingers crossed and hope Sark can bring some of that USC magic back and turn Hurts into Matt Leinart.

Sometimes things don't work out exactly how they are planned. Life 101, bro.

So you are upset that we didn't have a Tom Brady back there last season? Hurts was a true freshman, I don't know how much more it can possibly be stressed that Hurts's problems last year are exactly the kind of problems that keep true freshmen off the field. But what was our other option?

He will get better in the passing game. He has arm talent, and we pulverized most teams that we played last year with our offensive recipe. That recipe will only be more potent in 2017. I, for one, am very excited to see what our offense will look like next year with a sophomore Hurts.

No I am upset that we don't have a QB that can hit a simple fricking slant or crossing route.

Exactly

We pulverized teams with defense and our running game. We pulverized teams because of sheer discrepancy of talent. When we met teams as equally talented (Clemson, LSU) it was a shite show.

Lets hope so because arm talent alone isn't going to get it done.

One of the things I am curious about is I wonder how he will react now that he does not have two older guys as security blankets behind him. Every player wants to play and be the starter but there has to be some comfort in knowing if I can't get it done there's guys behind me that can. He won't have that next yr. I wonder if it will effect him.

What makes you think that any of the others would have been better? Is it the all of the many hours that you spent watching practice and scrimmage reps last year?

BB's pass to O.J. Howard down the middle for a 40 yd or so TD last year makes me think he would have been better. I have not seen Hurts make a throw like that in his career. I like QB's that are able to throw the football downfield.
