2013 F150 5.0 XLT 153,000 miles

This past summer the AC was blowing warm. I got it evacuated and refilled. It was full and no leaks said the tech but it was now blowing cold.
Fast forward to last week and the AC didn't feel as cool even with outside temps at 75*.
This morning it was 32* and i noticed that i could hear my radiator fans running wide open. Turning AC off doesnt stop fans
Only turning off the truck stops them. Fans only kick on when AC is ON. If I dont click AC then the fans dont kick on. Engine coolant level is good too. Heater works fine. AC blows warm.

I'm thinking it's a bad thermostat or pressure switch.
My question is: how do I go about finding what's bad without blindly replacing parts? Not sure there is a check for a thermostat but that's cheap and easy to replace.

So the fans stay on with Ac on or off but then you say the fan only comes on with AC on. IS it one or the other? Or is it intermittent?

That needs to be nailed down in detail to diagnose over the internet.

Fans come on whenever AC is switched ON or truck is started with AC ON.

Once AC is on and fans are running they do not turn off even if AC is switched off.

If AC is never turned on then fans dont turn on

Truck sounds like a space ship they are turning so fast

and is your radiator full? air voids in radiator will screw up how the fan thermostats work

and i have to ask why you run the a/c if you say its 32 degrees outside

The relays that control the fans on these trucks use a separate signal wire to know when the AC clutch is engaged, nothing to do with the thermostat there. Probably a faulty relay, electric cooling fans are hard on them. I built my own dual-fan controller for my truck but always keep two spare 40A relays in the glove box.

shows my age

i still remember when you can actually work on a truck without needing a computer diagnostic

I'd say its ful unless an air bubble can come out of nowhere. I'll check it.
Turned on the AC after a 30 minute drive with the heater and jacket on...

This morning:
When climate control is on but not the AC i get no fans running. When i turn AC on i can hear the compressor/clutch start and rpms dip then fans turn on high right away.

-Engine coolant was topped off last night and problem still exists.

Hey bud, I'm an old Ford mechanic. Don't work at Ford anymore but still do a little mechanic work once a week at a shop to keep my skills on point.

You need to see what the AC High pressure switch is reading.Often times they'll show very high pressure to the computer and the computer thinks it needs to run the fans on high to drop the pressures down. That reading can be seen with a proper scanner.

Is this a FORD only scanner or will any shop have this?

any shop. You should take this opportunity to invest in a decent scanner that you can use. They're really not all that expensive. Look into the Autel line of scanners.

I changed the high pressure sensor for the AC today and it didnt fix the issue. I guess getting it read is the shortest route to fixing it

You said you topped off the coolant. Was it actually low? The way those reservoirs work is the fluid level needs to go over a certain point in the reservoir before it starts channeling the coolant into the radiator. We've had to elevate the front of some trucks and then fill to get all air out of the system while the vehicle is running sometimes when the coolant has dropped below a certain level. If you had to put 1/2 a gallon or more coolant in the system then you very well may still have an air pocket in there.

When cold the level was about half way between the "cold level" lines on the reservoir. I put 1/3 of a container of coolant in. No more than half at the most

Try running your truck on a steep incline until it reaches operating temperature. Put back on flat surface amd see if the level went down.

My work parking lot is angled up pretty good. I just went out there and tried to burp the coolant system. No bubble or burps came out.
Im heading to the deer camp soon so any more fixes will have to be tried on Sunday but ill jack up the front end and try again but im pretty sure its good to go

After further research, i believe it is my AC expansion valve or compressor clutch

If you want to send your AC symptoms in to Louis Altazan with AGCO Automotive in BR he will get back with you within 24 hours, usually sooner, with his suggestions on what the problem might be, and if by chance your issue happens to be a common Issue or pattern failure with your year model Ford he can often get you pretty close to the potential issue. Been a customer of his for 25+ years. And don’t worry your contact will not be put any type of email list, all the info is automatically purged after he replies to you.

Read this linked thread on the F150 Forum. Others have had the same problem but doesn't really give one fix for all. Lots of firing the parts cannon with poor results.
