It doesn't sound like it's cost prohibitive. Go for it.

New small engines, I run for about 30 minutes to an hour, then I do a "break-in" oil change. The oil sparkles like Pert shampoo. After that, I just change it after long, hot runs.

As far as preventative care, other than a fuel additive for ethanol if you have to run it, I would keep on hand a spare carburetor. For most portable sets, you can get a carb kit with new gaskets, fuel lines, and related hardware for about $25 on Amazon. They are easy to swap out, and might save the day in an emergency.
