I recently bought a home and this is my first time having a lawn ( lived in an apt before). I have been watering about an inch a week and mowing but wanted to ask if there is anything i need to do fertilizer/ weed prevention wise? TIA, any advice is much appreciated as i am pretty new to this

Where are you? Knowing your turf would help. Most weeds can be knocked out with a lot of different herbicides. Some weeds require more specialized herbicides to go away. Prevention is the key to maintaining weed control. Depending on how much you care, sometimes any amount of green grass (whether it be a weed or your turf) will look nice to some, not so great to others. Right now I'm putting more effort into my yard, eliminated most of the green weeds, and am living with a bunch of barren spots where weeds use to exist. Eye sore for now, but one day it'll grow with my normal turf.
Get a soil sample from a nearby nursery and send it off for analysis. I went to Clegg's in BR for my box, did two samples (front & back yard) and paid $11 to ship, $11/sample. Did 10 spots in both yards and mixed each sample up before bagging it.
I'm guessing most Louisiana lawns include St. Aug, Bermuda, Centipede, and Zoysia. Avoid the "Southern lawn weed and feed" stuff you find. Those do not target a specific turfgrass. IMO it's like giving your lawn a multivitamin.
The best way to have a low weed lawn is to have healthy grass with a healthy root system. Regularly cutting your lawn at the appropriate height, watering when necessary, aerating, dethatching are all going to help your lawn breathe and grow.
