They seen it every time, I have sent it through the x-ray every time. I have never tried to hide it, even had them put in back into my hands.
As for my recommendations... Stop being cheap and buy your drinks, they are being sold everywhere on the boat. Don't worry about it too much you will have...

Then make it to the first port, buy liquor there in any size bottle smaller than a fifth and they will let you take it back to your room. Any size bigger and they will hold until you depart.

You are allowed to carry on a case of water. Without breaking the case wrapping, take out the middle 12 bottles and fill them with vodka then dot the top of the caps with a sharpie so you know which bottles are which then put all of the bottles back in as they were. I worked in a foundry in south Louisiana casting metal flanges for two years. I can not explain the heat in there and having to make heavy lifts. We worked 6 - 10's....
