Finebaum's comment about no punishments=looking very bad for a program raises a good question. This is a pretty tough situation for any coach. Looking for neutral perspectives:

-two of your program's players are in a vehicle with two other people, a stolen gun, and marijuana.

-it seems that the search/arrests were botched, so they won't be prosecuted. Anyone buying the air conditioning comment is a fool.

-the players remain innocent and will likely tell the program that the stolen gun wasn't theirs to begin with.

So you have a difficult situation where your athletes possibly broke a law, but are innocent. Does it become the coach's role to investigate further? Or do you expect him to reserve judgement?

Same as Saban, indefinite suspension until charges are dropped (maybe a 1 game suspension, but it's different playing App State when Bama have USC)

Probably one or two games maybe zero if he knows something that the public doesn't

Suspend them the first game and be done with it. That is unless the first game is not a warm-up game, then just community service and maybe a public apology.
I can't blame Saban for doing what he did. He's doing what's best for him and his team.

Indefinite suspension until either indicted (then kicked off) or the charges or dropped.

Saban is doing the right thing. He knows the situation better than the rest of us.

The Nkemdiches missed plenty of time (and bowl games) because of drug incidents or issues. Robert was suspended from the Sugar Bowl, effectively ending his collegiate career, after he had his night flight in Atlanta. Denzel missed out on most of last season because of personal demons, not to mention the games he'd missed in previous seasons due to poor decision making. I think few would argue that Robert wouldn't be as high profile a player as Cam, and Robert didn't have a stolen firearm on him when he dove out the window.

Alabama can beat USCw without CRob. I would suspend him from the opener and be done with it. I know non-LSU fans only, but that is what I would do and it's not even a question.

Game 1 is vs cupcake = 1 game suspension

Game 1 is not vs cupcake = 1 quarter/half suspension

If you do nothing it gives the appearance you condone stuff. Image does matter to a degree.

Can you find, ANYWHERE that Cam Robinson had been in any trouble,EVER before? The Nkemdiche brothers were trouble from the start for Ole Miss (they're very photogenic ) You'r talking apples and oranges here.

You're right. I'm talking about one coaching suspending his players and one coach who's doing nothing. Apples and oranges.

I would expect the law to do its job and prosecute persons who brake the law. Should not be up to any coach to decide. Once arrested scholarship should be pulled.

It's kind of what I was thinking. Coaches are not expected to have a background in law, so why are they expected to continue a closed case?

The flip side here is that they have leading authority in the football program. I'm sure Coach Saban has conducted his own investigation. Where it gets pretty complicated is when he has to make this decision:

Do I ignore the botched search/arrests and consider the illegal gun and marijuana fair game for punishment? Or do I excluded the findings because the evidence was found improperly with potential rights violated?

Another perspective: parents don't care how the evidence was found, they're going to ground you regardless.

"Saban is doing the right thing". Ha Ha Ha. Those 6 words should NEVER be seen in the same sentence!

If the charges were dropped I don't know how you can suspend them. I'm sure there was internal punishment. He kicked the only true nose guard Bama has had since Terrence Cody for domestic abuse when he was warned prior to coming to Alabama. His charges were dropped but it didn't matter. I know nothing about Hootie Jones but isn't Cam a good student and isn't this his first offense?

You just supported Saban's entire philosophy. Discipline is fundamwntally about changing behavior, and the Nkemdiches never did.
