Speaking of WLOCP. Why is UF v. UGA not home and away like other games?

Growing up as a lifetime Dawg fan I was basically told it is because UF is somehow "scared" to do home and away.

What is the truth?

Eta. And how is Jax "neutral?"

I agree with that. Is that the only reason though? I lived in Jax for 2 years and I know it brings big revenue into Jax too.

UGA and UF also make more money doing it this way.

Basically I'm wondering if what I was told by my 2 uncles who are UGA alumni is true- that UF is scared to come to Athens.

Don't think so. At least not anymore scared than we would be to go to Gainesville.

pquote]In 1933, the game was permanently moved to Jacksonville, Florida, putting to bed several failed attempts to stage the game in Savannah, Tampa, and Athens. 18 years earlier, Jacksonville mayor J.E.T. Bowden declared the Friday before the 1915 Florida-Georgia game to be a semi-holiday in order to really get the city to focus on the game, and to make the teams want to come back and play again in his city. It eventually worked, and Jacksonville became the game's permanent home.[/quote]

Each side has the same number of fans. Nobody cried about it being unfair when we were wearing them slap out and dominating the series for the first 100 years.

from wiki:

"As of the 2009 contest, the universities made $1.7 million every year, or $3.4 million every two years, as opposed to an expected $2.2 million every two years if the game were played at their respective home stadiums.[8] The game weekend is also extremely lucrative for Jacksonville businesses, particularly in the downtown area, with many reporting that it is their busiest weekend of the year.[8"

Thanks.
Yeah, as I've gotten older I've wondered more and more about things I think are "facts" because my family told me so.

The game in Jacksonville creates more revenue than it would in Athens or Gainesville in a given year. By splitting the bigger payout equally every year, UGA and UF make more money than they would if they got the whole, smaller payout every other year.

By playing the game at a neutral site, rather than on their respective campuses, both universities' athletic programs derive more revenue from the game than if the site rotated on a "home-and-away" basis. meh, I wouldn't say that, didn't he say uncles told him when he was little?

sounds more like adults having some fun at UF's expense...

also - this game gives S GA peeps a chance to have a game that is an easier drive

Now I know the truth.

As much as I hate the Gators the "scared" thing never really made sense to me. Just my uncle's alumni bias.

Thanks everyone.

If case you dont remember 1995

quote:

Gators starting quarterback Danny Wuerffel threw for 242 yards and five touchdowns before leaving the game in the third quarter. With the Gators leading 38–17 in the fourth quarter, Gators backup quarterback Eric Kresser threw for two more touchdowns, one with 1:21 remaining, to make the final score 52–17. After the game, Gators coach Steve Spurrier stated that he had wanted to be the first opponent to hang "half a hundred" on the Bulldogs in their own stadium because "we heard no one had ever done that before." The Gators' fifty-two points remains the record for most scored against Georgia "between the hedges

I dont think they are scared

Yeah. They'd take me when I was very young. Saw Herschel come out of tunnel. At that time (not sure if it's still the same) they put up a chain link fence across the track as they would come onto the field. I was hanging on that fence maybe I was 6 years old. HW walked 3 feet away from me. Will never forget.

Yeah saw that thread. Probably why no National Championship since 1980.
If we only had that IPF.

Eta. Appreciate the responses. Always wondered about this and truthfully I'm trying to learn where and how to start threads. Originally thought about putting this on the sec rant. Glad I didn't, would have sounded like an idiot. So many different boards connected to this one and trying to find my way around.
