One of my favorite Atlanta beer guys, Ale Sharpton, thinks that Athens is the next great craft beer town. Thought some of you could appreciate this...

Next great? I'd say we are already there. I can't wait to sample the products from Creature Comforts.

I hope this turns out to be true... It has the market

Very nice link.
I am liking all of the new Southern boutique whiskey brewers that are popping up all over the South as well, including Georgia.
But nothing like Kentucky where you have more barrels of aging whiskey currently in state than you have resident humans.

Really looking forward to trying out the Athena brew from CC during Criterium. Terrapin RPA has always been my "thinking of home" beer when it comes to Athens, but I'm taking nominations from these new guys to usurp that throne (though don't get me wrong, I will always hold Terrapin in high esteem).

Athens has been a great beer town for those who care enough to pay attention. I'm a little less optimistic about things to come because of a few key figures in the beer scene who have left Athens in the past year. Maybe someone else will step up, but I'm not really seeing it yet. For example, the tap lineup for Brewhaha is good this year, but it's nowhere near the lineups we've seen over the past five years. Of course, I'm probably just a jaded old beer nerd.
Richard Miley (mentioned in the article) is a cool guy and a top shelf chef and beer lover. We are lucky to have him around.

Nice. I can see it happening. Great college town with a variety of micro-breweries. Sounds delicious.

Perfect town for it. Hope the 3 tier distribution system doesn't scare off perspective brewers.

Hopefully that will change soon, I never thought I'd see the day GA allowed Sunday Sales.
On that note, before everyone gets excited, and as you know CD, having 100 micro brews in Athens won't be like having 100 microbrews in 47 other states. See, the microbrews won't be able to sell to you. They can only sell to distributors. Sure, you can buy it at Kroger, or even at the bar next door, but you won't be able to walk up to the bar at the microbrew and buy it.
Moon River in Savannah? Copper Creek in Athens? You can buy beer in their brewery/restaurant, right? Yes, because they don't sell to a distributor. In GA, and 2 other states, a brew can sell to the public OR sell to a distributor, but not both.
That means most all brewers are going to choose the option of selling to distributors, much bigger market.

Does Terrapin not skirt this rule by selling their beer at the brewery as a "tasting?"

This. If you've never been to Highland Brewing or anywhere else in Asheville, it's a pretty awesome atmosphere when you can sit around the tasting room, listen to live music, and buy as much fresh craft beer as you like... without having to be around a bunch of d-bags at a bar.

Yes they do. Buy a ticket to event, beer is free samples when you buy a glass.

Is Catch 22 new or did I somehow go through UGA and not hear about it? That burger looks incredible.

Catch 22 is in the Epps Bridge shopping center area, buried next to the Kohls, technically in Oconee County, their target audience isn't Athens, it's Watkinsville/Oconee, where people have money to buy a $22 cheeseburger. Sewn onto a dead cat's head.

I didn't think hipsters ate cheeseburgers.
And, yeah, it may be overpriced but it looks amazing.

I have went to HS with one of the guys from CC and have been following them for a while. Can't wait to get up to Athens and try the brews.
Me and a couple of friends have done some home brewing and have thought about starting a brewery here in Rome.
